What\'s the diff between Radials and Bias Ply tires?

What's the diff between Radials and Bias Ply tires? I have always wondered and have never asked. I came to the assumption that Radials are just better for road use /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: What\'s the diff between Radials and Bias Ply tires?

Doesn't it have to do with how the metal bands are oriented in the tire?

Re: What\'s the diff between Radials and Bias Ply tires?

It has to do with the way the plies are oriented. Radials are at 90* angles to each other (like this -| ). Bias plies are at a 45* angle. (/\)

So are the Bias plies stronger?

Absolutely.

Re: What\'s the diff between Radials and Bias Ply tires?

The sections of rubber in a radial tire go around the curcumfrence of the tire to make it ride better and stop flat spots. After doing this they construct a seperate section to be used at the sidewall, usually a couple plys thinner than the tread. On bias ply tires, the sections start at one bead, go over where the tread would be, and end up at the other bead of the tire. This makes the sidewalls about as strong as the tread section, but doesnt make for a nice ride since as it rolls the tire is going over all the different sections of rubber going accross the tire.

Radials are also mroe expensive, but im sure youve noticed that.

Yea, that's why i wanted to know what the diff was. I guess bias is the best choice for trail dedicated rigs and radials are good for DD and trail used rigs.
