Whats the diff in these 6.2\'s?

I posted this in the Diesel section but just wanted to get more input.
My fathers 84 Sub has a 6.2 in it, the crank broke. I located anouther 6.2 cheep out of an 83 pick up, the 84 has an open intake and the 83 has an egr valve in the middle of the intake air inlet.
Whats the diff between the two engines?
Which is better?
Should I just pull the crank from the 83 and stick it into the 84?
Any info would be nice, thanks.

The open intake manifold will flow more cfm's for sure due to it being less obstucted and I've read of claims of 10-hp just from the manifold swaps. Just swap manifolds. The open style intake is called a "J" code manifold. Hope this helps.

yeah, that's right
the non EGR engines were the J codes which came from 1 ton trucks.
the one with the EGR is a C code and it came from 1/2 and 3/4 tons.
I'm guessing the the sub had a C code engine with a J intake manifold.

I don't think this is the original motor in the sub. My father just bought it like it is. It has a t 400 behind it but it has what looks like a detent cable coming out of what should be the vacum modulater. But its coiled up and tied off not going anywhere and has no bracket for a detent cable on the motor. The motor we bought was in front of a t 700 and has a tv bracket on it. Does anyone know anything about this coming from the tranny?? It is a t 400 so it should'nt have a detent cable?
