The tranny went out on my '93 K2500. When I called around for quotes I was asked what serial number mine was, 3KCD or 3KKD. I checked and mine is a 3KKD. I spoke with 2 Chevy dealerships and neither one had any idea what the difference is and neither did the tranny shops I called. Does anyone on here know what the difference is.

Thanks,
Rick

If it is a 4L80E there was a small change to the electrical connector right about 1993. The newer style connector is much better and it would be worth upgrading to that style while your messing with the tranny.

Then it is probably something to do with the change from the 4L60 to the 4L60E... I know '91 was non electronic and it changed soon after that.

From what I've found online both serial numbers were offered on these trucks. I'm not too worried about it, I am just trying to find out what the difference is.

Complete guess, since ones a C and ones a K, is it 2 vs 4WD?

Each drivetrain combo typically had all sorts of internal differences, from valves, springs, pressure, torque converters, up to and including things like thrust bearings vs bushings and the number of clutches and steels in various clutch packs.

As a made up example, for 1993 trucks, say a 4L60(or 4l60e, whatever it is) has 200 parts. Since the combination of parts possible in a component as complex as a transmission is usually staggering, there would probably actually be 400 or more parts associated with the 4L60 in the truck that year. 10 different torque converters, and so on.

If the GM dealership wasn't lazy or was educated, they could look up the numbers, probably in the parts manual.

The only logical answer I've gotten so far is it is a difference in the valving of the tranny to match the rear end ratio and the engine that came in the truck. While were on the subject of tranny's, who has had experience with Certified Transmission?
