Recently purchased a 1979 gmc sierra and was wondering what the differences are between the k5 and the gmc model (sierra)?

"Sierra" was a trim-line available on GMC trucks, including the Jimmy, Suburban and pickups. There were also "High Sierra", "Sierra Grande" and "Sierra Classic", depending on model (I'm not sure if you're asking about a Blazer/Jimmy or a pickup.) In that year, the Chevy trimlines were "Custom Deluxe" and "Cheyenne" for the Blazer/Jimmy, and the pickups also had "Scottsdale" and "Silverado."

You can see what each had in the Brochures @ http://brochures.slosh.com/

Go to 1979, then whatever the truck of interest is, and you can compare it to the other versions as well.

I was asking what the difference is between my chevy k5 blazer and the gmc sierra I just purchased are. They appear the same and I know most parts interchange. Seems I read somewhere that the gmc were built a little stouter then the Chevy's but I could be wrong. I was hoping someone could clarify what is different between the two.

There isn't a difference, pretty sure they came off the same assembly line. Grill, trim, badges, thats about it.

I may have been phrasing wrong. What are the differences between chevy k5 and the GMC Jimmy

In any given year, the Blazer and Jimmy are essentially the same truck, sold under two names. There will be some cosmetic differences but they are mechanically identical.

The difference is the GMC is pronounced Gee-Emm-Cee and the Chevy is pronounced Sheh-vee, or Sheh-vroh-lay.

Blazer is pronounced Blay-zer and Jimmy is pronounced Gym-mee.

The other difference is Chevy is a K5 and GMC is a K1500 in the half ton category but all Blazers and Jimmys are K5's.

Don't get us started, as you know dang well that there is no such thing as a K5 and there were V1500's, etc etc. :D

Also, I wasn't aware the Jimmies actually had the K/5 fender badge.
