What's the story with this thing?

ooooooh... purty. it looks like something like this would drop my highway rpms to 1631 at 60mph... can anyone say 25ish mpg on 38's? :D only kicks my crawl ratio down to 66:1 though.

I think it would be cool to get one of those 4 speed t-cases and an overdrive unit. All kinds of options... but major coin.

further analysis of the pic makes it look like it would only work w/ a 2wd trans and a divorced t-case. too much work for too little gain.

That's an old brownie box. They used to run them around here years ago in the old logging truck. They used them to climb up hills to get to the loading sites and for lower gears to come down a steep grade in the days before Jake brakes. You would have found them in an old Pete or KW back in the day with a Clarke 3 or 4 speed. They pretty much went the way of the dodo bird in the early 70's.

Neat.

Funny, I was just looking at one here on Craigslist.

FWIW, someone has a Ranger OD unit for a SM465 for sale on here.

yeah, i noticed that. :) it's what got me interested to looking at the options.

If I had a bazillion bucks I'd put a Ranger and SM465 in both trucks...but I'm broke ya know?

They are BIG. I have one as well. Its slightly larger than a SM465, and a bit longer too.

Also note how the shaft is near the top of the unit. they have to be hung low to line up with your drivelines. that means another anchor hanging under your truck to snag on.

However on the positive side, I doubt youd ever break it in a light truck.
