Hey fellas, I'm new to the sight, so over look my ignorance .

What's this big piece of plastic in the gas tank of my 89 k5? Is it supposed to be in there or what?

Yes it's supposed to be there. It's the baffle that keeps gas near the pick up tube for the pump, like when going around a turn or on an incline. They do break sometimes though.

The gas tank renu place has a little sign up on the back of it's front door, "things we found in gas tanks"
They include: golf balls, $5000 worth of silver coins, keys, screws, pens, drugs and tons of other crap I can't remember.

Yes, the plastic bathtub is supposed to be there, was introduced on TBI trucks. Most all fuel injected vehicles have a little bathtub of some sort around the fuel pickup.

Thanks guys! After dropping the tank to change the fuel pump, I heard something flopping around and didn't have a clue why it was in there...... a buddy with baby hands stopped by(ain't no way my meat hooks was fitting in the pump hole) and we realized that it set on pegs in the bottom. He got it back where it goes, but one of the holes was busted out in the plastic.... maybe it'll stay put for a lil while!

I sure wish they had put baffles in the earlier diesel tanks. A turn or an incline is all it takes when the tank is low. I've had mine stall out with 2 gallons left in the tank! :doah:

I've had my 6.2 die while parked on an incline in traffic too...tank was maybe 1/4 full too,all the fuel ran back to the rear of the tank and it sucked in air--wasn't fun getting the truck off the road so I could fool with getting it re-started--it has happened more than once too,but the other times the electric fuel pump I added managed to get fuel to the filter before getting completely air bound..
...since then I've been paranoid about driving it with less than 1/2 a tank...(gas gauge doesn't work either,it pegs out at 3 o'clock thanks to a bad sending unit)..
