I just picked up a '75 Jimmy and the damn steering wheel has some type of sticky film all over it. This is the fifth pre 80's GM truck I've owned and all of them have had this to some extent. What the hell is it? Is there a way to clean it? Surely I'm not the only one to experience this.

I dont know what it is but I trashed the wheel from my 77 K5. Damn thing looked like the goo from Alien was all over it.

I've used gasoline to scrub off the previous owners dead skin cells and other goo off my old trucks steering wheels..carb cleaber or brake cleaner works, sop does windsheild de-icer or WW fluid, but go easy with any of the stronger solvents, they can cause the plastic to crack or get stickier...I used a terry cloth beach towel to scrub the gunk off..

Always had good luck with amonia based cleaners (windex used to have amonia) - amonia seems to take it off and the plastic stays cleaner longer...
