What's wrong with my transmission?

I bought a TH700R4 off craigslist... big mistake. Heres what went on. It was fine for three weeks and I drove like an old lady the whole time. After three weeks, one day I was accelerating out of a stop sign and it went from first to second to neutral. I barely made it to my destination and by that time the other gears went too.

The truck sat for about a month in the same place before I could finally get it home. When I started it up to put it in gear it worked... kinda. I didn't use the throttle until I was trying to get it on the trailer in reverse. Even then the truck made it half way up and I needed help of two other people to push, but it was actually moving this time.

I would assume this needs to be rebuilt, but is it something simple?

My truck is a 1990 and is fuel injected with an aftermarket 350hp crate engine.

Thanks!

You checked the fluid level?

Chances are, if it could have been a simple fix, it's a complete rebuild now. And a new torque converter.

Fluid is all over the garage floor now, but it's been sitting for ten months. The fluid didn't happen as soon as it was dropped off.

So... it has a fluid leak?

Or... did it leak out 10 months ago?

Please clarify...

It had a slow leak when parked, (10 months ago) then turned into a huge puddle over time. I know it needs fluid, but could just fluid alone be the very reason why it quit working? When it cooled down it halfway worked.

So it's gone?

If so I just called a shop and was quoted for $895 complete rebuild with one year warranty. Sound good or bad? Keep in mind this is the city of Chicago. :eek1:

I would add fluid as needed and check for proper trans operation before condemning it.

You do know how to properly check trans fluid level, right? Some people don't know.

I check the tranny fluid the same as I would with the engine. Please correct me if this is wrong.

Pull the dip stick, wipe clean, dip again... hold it a few seconds, then pull it out again and check.

I dunno. Maybe, just maybe, it developed a leak and is just low on fluid. Fix the leak, add fluid and he might just be good to go.

But I always think the glass is half full...

I try also... but with the 700's, it seems that if something is wrong, its usually a huge problem requiring an overhaul.

Also, when it was installed, the TV cable length had to be set. If that was not done, and it was off, then the tranny is most likely toast.

I would try to spot the leak to be sure its not an internal part sticking out through the side or something, fill it to below the full mark on the dipstick, run the engine until the transmission fluid is up to operating temp, and then check the level.
The fluid expands when it gets warm, so that is why you check it at temp.

Then, set the TV cable, and try it.

Even if it was just low on fluid, it uses the fluid pressure to lock the clutches, and low fluid can equal low pressure and slipped and burned clutches.

If the fluid in it now is brown and/or smells burnt, don't even bother putting any in.
It might work, but its just a time bomb waiting for you to get in a bad place to totally crap out.
