whats your ball for? ANSWERED

CRAP, something just occurred to me. I ought to start a new thread, but maybe enough will see it here.

I was telling a friend of mine about this thread and he reminded me of this.
I know everybody already knows this.
Until someone doesn't.

I have a personal policy: When it comes down to actual life or death, there are no stupid questions, and you NEVER assume someone already knows something.

SO, anyone reading this, if you know of someone that has a bed liner or sprayed in coating in their truck, TELL THEM. Do not figure that they know it.

If you use a metal gas can to haul gas for any reason, and you have it in the bed of a truck with some kind of non-conductive liner.

NEVER NEVER try to put gas in it while it is in the truck.
ALWAYS take it out and sit it on the ground.

When it is in the truck, it is insulated from any kind of ground. Which means either it, or the nozzle of the gas pump, or even your hand holding the nozzle can have enough of a static charge to ignite the fumes in the can when you touch the metal nozzle to the can.

Trust me. A 5 gallon steel can filled with nothing but gas fumes WILL ruin your whole day if it is detonated by a static spark.

Sure, everybody knows that. But your young daughter knows not to go out into the highway, but you still say something when you see her heading that way....right?

You know, I don't see as many of the gas tankers with the straps around here either. I know a guy who is in charge of a gas terminal. I'm going to ask him the next time I see him.
As for the chain, I hope it was brass or bronze. High carbon steel would seem to defeat the purpose....<G>.

Pretty sure this is true for plastic too. Not just metal cans. Basically, never fill a can in a vehicle, put it on teh ground.

Yep plastic also especially if it slides around at all in the vehicle. Kind of like a balloon being rubbed against your hair.

I have witnessed several of these flash fires from the static electricity.

ALL of our trucks at the plant have a ground cable connected to the truck, and the vessels, or holding tanks, are all grounded individually. Every unloading station has a rack setup for this. All hoses (4" Kamlock) have ground wires from one end to the other attached to the Kamlock fittings also.

And here I thought antennas were just to deflect small branches away from the windshield. :D
