wheel back spacing**NOW where do you guys get your 16x8 steelies??

I'm wanting 16x8 but am not sure what I need backspacing wise. Most of what I see in steelies is 4" or so..

4" or so would be a little less backspacing than stock.

Remember that if you go with a wider wheel than the stock wheels but keep the backspacing stock(ish) most (or all if you go with a stock backspacing) of the extra width of the wheel is basically going out away from the hub. If that makes any sense.

I've seen a lot of folks get wider wheels but also get them with less backspacing and then be surprised when their tires and wheels stick out so much.

So do you think 4" might be too much on 16x8 or 15x8 wheels? From what I understand it doesn't take much to clearance the calipers on a front 10b, but I'm more worried about the tires being tucked too far into the wheel wells.

an 8" wide rim is the width of a stock rallye wheel. 4" backspacing won't affect the fit over the brakes on a 10bolt I don't believe. The first place I ran into clearence problems with aftermarket wheels was with the tierod end (that was with a set of 15x10 wheels though)

There are enough guys on here running steelies that you can probably find someone to post up a pic with backspacings of 3.5 to 4

Okay, well I decided to stay 16"..

Now, is there anywhere I can get a black 16x8 with 3.5-4" of backspace for no more than $70 a wheel? Locally they all want around $100 a wheel for steelies :eek1:

I like the Cragar's Summit sells. Had a set of their 16x7's black Soft 8's for the wife's last ride. Good quality and purty.

On the 16x8 Cragar the BS on the soft 8's I think are 5" on 6x5.5 and if you step up to 8x6.5 it is 4.5. this is the same problem I'm having but I'm looking for 17x9 with 3.5-4in BS and I can't find them unless I go with MRW, TR or other custom makes. Right now I have the old school white wagon wheel with the triagles witch is a 15x10 with 4" BS. I think you can find them in 16.5x8 with a 4" BS but I'm not sure.

Yeah but he's not running big tires. The 4.5" backspacing should work out nicely for him.

That's what's holding me back from ordering the Cragar's from summit.. 4.5" of BS, wasn't sure if that was too much or not :doah:

That's in the neighborhood of the stock wheels which should have somewhere around 4.25-4.5" or so of backspacing, maybe a bit more. Having the same backspacing on a wider wheel just means the wheel effectively sticks out from the center of the vehicle farther. In your case probably a good thing since you don't want the tire hitting the drag link or suspension. Put less backspacing on it and have a wider rim and you're probably going to end up catching the fender easier.

Good to know. Not sure if I'll have too much to worry about as the tires should be the same width that I got now, or close to it. Hmm.. I should just pull a wheel off my truck and measure it.. there's an idea :doah::haha:

I like the stance now.. not a fan of the moto wheels.

You'll probably find the 285 is about an inch wider. Hard to say though, you might have wide 265's and narrow 285's.

Which wheels/backspacing did you end up with, jonathan? I'm looking to go the 315/75/R16 route with a 4" lift as well.

I put a set of 16x8 "Soft "8's" on my 1 Ton for $260.00 shipped to my house from Summit. I did go with 4.5" of back spacing.

Hmmm...so I was looking at my wheels and axles side by side this weekend. The 15 x 10" wheels on the truck right now have 4" of backspacing and they are damn near touching the tie rod ends on the stock 10-bolt.

I've also got a set of stock chevy 16 x 6.75" 8-lug wheels with about 4.625" backspacing that I test fit on the 3/4 ton 10-bolt and they clear the tie rod end by over an inch. I know the 3/4 ton rotors are a little deeper but I didn't realize it would be that much of a difference.

If that's the case then the 4.5" should be fine. Aside from the 10" wide wheels I have now, I really like the current placement of the tires in the wheel wells so I want to make sure it's about the same when I swap axles, wheels and tires.
