Almost certainly a wheel bearing. The hard pull could be a brake problem, but the popping and grinding point to bearings instead.
As for what you are getting into, that is a good question.
First you need to get it home or somewhere you can work on it well. I have changed wheel bearings on the side of the road, and a couple of times in deep mud in the swamp, but home is much better.
Next, do not expect to just pull the hub, replace the bearings and drive it off. Due to the symptoms, there might be more involved.
Its possible that the inside bearing may have welded its self to the race, and either spun the race damaging the hub, or spun on the spindle damaging it.
In other words, its fixable, but don't count on having it to drive right away until you get in and see whats what.
And, of course, do the other side. If this side went bad, the other side is probably not far behind.
