wheel offset?

I'm lookin at some american eagle wheels.However I don't get the offset.
Howis that measured from where to where? example 16x8 offset is -4
 
It's the distance from the inner edge of the rim to the WMS (wheel mounting surface). To measure it, lay a rim on the ground so the back side faces up. Lay a straight edge on the edge of the rim and measure down to the WMS.
 
Zero offset puts the WMS in the middle of the wheel. i.e. on a 16x8 wheel that gives 4" backsacing.

+ offset puts more of the wheel inboard (more backspacing), - offset puts more wheel outboar. (less backspacing).
