Im trying so hard to get these rallies to look good and im not sure why. Ive got the backs and centers perfect, so i did a quick 120 grit sand to rough up the front, spray, winds not blowing, 84° out and 32% humidity. But every-time i spray its coming out chaulky and rough not smooth, so i cleaned them off exceptionally well and they came out worse! Im not sure if the primer isn't just useless (dad painted the car style rallies and i dont believe he used any primer and its held up fine, after media blasting in both cases of course).

Ive spent quite a bit on paint already and everything but the fronts look good, im debating re-media-blasting the front (since i had to sand it and the marks are showing through) and then not using any primer. Just seems sometimes i try so hard but only ever end up with an "alright" result.

well, they dont look as bad as i thought. Gonna let them sit overnight before i do anything more. Just need to take some 120 or 220 grit over the areas where its currently rough, and then respray and see if its any better.

Side question, this is napa brand paint my dad bought 4 years ago (looks like a duplicolor spray nozzle and may be duplicolor paint), my question is would this paint be considered "old" and should I try not to use it? I know canned paint goes bad, but what about spray paint?

has it been frozen?

dealing with a chemical mix such as ready to spray paint, it can degrade over time, but if you painted a couple wheels with it already with good results, I'd say the paint is ok. Is the paint wrinkling, or otherwise acting like a reaction to the primer?

he last used the paint 4 years ago, haha. Guess i didnt add that in. Sometimes the paint looks great on the wheel, then other areas of the wheel it turned back, and then second round it was worse. Think i should go buy some fresh paint and try that?

And no wrinkling, just acting like its drying before it hits the wheel and being kinda rubbery and rough. Paint just may be bad.

That is probably either you didn't shake the paint long enough before spraying or the paint is so old and seperating and it's not coming out even.
I would definitely start with fresh paint for something I want to look good.
I would use these paints on my beater to make it one color, that is all, or for guide for sanding bondo.:thumb:

Gonna get new paint then. Evidently duplicolor makes a version (CDSGM337, cant find it on orileys website and i doubt they stock it)

Napas martin senour brand has it, http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=MSR7245_0006419575

or kyrlon dull aluminum #1403 is supposed to be a very close match.

Gonna call orileys see what they can find. Our ace hardware has a huge kyrlon section but im not sure if they have argent silver.

I believe the color you are looking for is Silver. Argent is silver in french, and maybe also in spanish.:thumb:

Argent was also a color description GM used for wheel, trim, and body accessories paint.

I agree with Iceman, go get some new paint, make sure your prep materials aren't contaminated with anything, and use some surface prep like alcohol, or wax and grease remover, to remove any existing contaminants.

I've had best results with Aervoe paint. Argent silver is a factory GM color and it what the silver on the side of my blazer is.

Make sure that the primer is compatible with the type of paint you're using. You can't mix laquer and water based paints/primers.

Good enough for a driver. Out of 4 cans of fresh paint, 3 got clogged within first thirty seconds, and they all had red tips, and the one good can had a blue tip. All of the cans dad had used red tips as well, so im thinking it was just as old of paint, got them returned no problem. but wheels look great for a driver. Ended up using a tack cloth to clean the wheels of the old stuff after some 400 grit paper. Didn't use any wax and grease remover because the guy advised me against it since the sanding paper trails would allow the residue to stay in there, but rinsed it off with water let it dry then sprayed it. Good enough for a driver.

I had the same issue I think it is just the spray bouncing off the opposite face. Get the wall wet and smooth and the angle is dryish/chalkish I must of put 6 or 7 coats trying to cure that. I finally did a clear over it all and it went away.
