I have a 72' K5 with the 44 front axle with discs. It is in pieces and it will soon be going back together. Is anyone running 16" rims with 4-5/8" backspacing? Will this size work? I have seen alot of 15's and 17's but no 16's. Thanks

That seems to be a little deep for back spacing IMO. The 15, or 16's is preference. I am running a 4" BS on a 15" 10 bolt (equivalent to the D44).
If you go 16's and later on go 1 ton, you'll be able to swap the tires over to the 8 lug wheels with no caliper grinding, so that's a plus.
