I recenty bought a 1974 k5 to replace the 1990 that i rolled 4 wheeling. i was driving and all the sudden i noticed a vibration and a seconf later my left rear tire fell off!. the truck is generally okay. just need new dust cover and drum brake kit. the bearing didnt freaze or explode. it just sheared ort borke all six lug nuts. does any one have an idea what happened? the only think of that i can think is that the mojarity of the lug nuts became loose and the tire started to woble and break them. it has a three inch body lift and a 4 inch suspension lift with 37 by 13.5 tsl on 15 by 10 inch rims. any insight would be much apprieciated.

When I got my axles, someone had already installed 1/2" studs instead of the factory 7/16". If you get the studs for a 2wd, I think they would fit , and they're 1/2.

Like you said, lug nuts probably got loose and sheared the studs.

I've seen a few 5 and 6 lug axles shear the studs like that with no apparent cause

At some point you are pushing the weight and tire size limits of the 5 or 6 lug pattern.

I had a 76 k5 that was dead stock. Same thing happened pass rear tire I still had 1 stud holding. I was just leaving my street when it happened so I was driving slow. It scared me and I sold it... The day before I had my family in it on the hihgway...

great i guess i am not the only one. it just shocked me that it happened so sundly with out little warning. so i gues the best ppan is to go to the 1/2 studs. thanks for all the responses. i have schol and a bumber to replace along with some body work to do unfortunally because i was doing about 45 mile an hour when it happened. quit a wild ride i hope i dont have to experience again. on the bright side this weekend i half of at pick apart

You could have the wrong style lug nuts for the wheels or studs that aren't long enough for the style of wheel you have.
