my 77 keeps breaking wheel studs the rim is perfect and so is the tire anyone had this problem or know what it could be??????

The only way you could be breaking them is from over torque. If the rim is good, that has to be your problem. are you using good US made studs or cheap imports?

If you are running aluminum rims with shank style lug nuts check two things as follows.
1) shank portion of the lug must have full length good fit with the rim lug bores. Loose fit will cause the wheel to be improperly centered and thus move and eventually break studs or deform the bores.
2) shank lugs have relatively thin metal until you get into the nut portion. Most racing sanctioning bodies require the stud to engage the nut and thus require longer studs and open ended shank style lugs. Under heavy use all bets are off unless you have proper engagement.

If you are running taper or eggcorn style lug nuts than disregard.

i dont think that i am over torquing them i dont use a torque wrench but i have a pretty good feel for what is notmal but i guess i will bust out the torque wrech and give it a shot ..... i just use the studs that they give me at o'rileys is there a specivic brand i should try or a bigger size

Are you lubricating the studs or nuts. If you are then you can very easily over torque them. I use anti-seize lube on mine only because I can get into a lot of water and mud and sandy/dusty trails. I also carry a doz spare studs and nuts with me all the time since that's cheap insurance (I snapped 3 studs in a row once changing a flat when I was 8 miles off any paved roads ). Since I started using the anti-seize (pipe lube) I haven't had any more problems.

Wheel studs are a bitch! I keep breaking and/or stripping them. But only the front ones which are a pain in the ass to change out. I do use anti-sieze too. I have aluminum wheels with conical style lug nuts.

I have a set of longer hardened wheel studs for front and rear that I plan on swapping in. Also available through Jegs.
