I went down to Hollister yesterday for a bit of wheeling with a guy I knew from work. He brought his 7 year old son and we had some fun getting a bit dirty and exploring some trails.

Here's his company car on it's first adventure off the highway.:D

One of the first obstacles I tried out was this mud pit. It looked simple enough and I could just hose off the mud when I'm done right?

The first time through it, I forgot to lock my front hubs in.:doah: We hadn't been there 5 minutes, and I'm already feeling done. A crowd formed pretty quickly and someone offered me a winch line and pulled me out. Once I was out, they suggested I try it again in 4wd so I figured I had nothing to lose. Here's the result.

This guy didn't make it was far as I did, although he was able to back out of it unassisted.

Then we decided to try some lesser challenges.

I also tried this triple diamond obstacle without even knowing it was an obstacle. My friends kid agreed I could have some of my man-points back after the epic mud pit failure.

I'd also like to compliment Dan at RuffStuff Specialties for the quality diff covers. A giant granite boulder jumped in front of me at about 5mph and stopped my truck cold with a loud bang! The rock was hurt more than me. :D

I need to apologize to 4x4High in advance for this mess of a motor. My clutch also appeared to be done for the day. How do I clean the clutch out???

And a parting poser shot.

I always wanted to ask if the Toyata was capable at all for a stock vehicle? I've only seen them from a distance but they look like clearance is good. Is it buiilt for off road at all? NOT THAT I'M GOING TO GO BUY ONE:crazy:

I guess it depends on what you mean by capable. The tube steps on the sides kept hanging up on some of the bigger rocks and logs so he stopped trying the bigger stuff after getting stuck a few times.

But it does have a rear locker and it seemed to perform pretty well. He followed me over most of the same things. I'd certainly enjoy driving one.

Brian, an open element air cleaner and muddy water getting up into the engine compartment is the quickest way to hydro lock an engine. :deal:

....and then you can rebuild it for him. Problem solved! :D

Moab, a few years ago: I've seen a stock FJ Cruiser on 31's drive everything on Golden Spike - including Double Whammy... rear bumper corners didn't look pretty, other than that, it looked no worse for wear. It has a few known soft spots, and the traction control can be unnerving sometimes (not just to the driver, but also to the spotter...), but I'd say they work pretty good.

does that mean my warranty is void now? :)

I agree it probably was not the best idea, but it was fun. Motor stayed running the entire time and I'm pretty sure all the mud in the engine compartment was splash up. The air cleaner was a bit dirty, but didn't appear to touch much water. Motor seems to run fine still. Clutch is another story.

The rock was probably only a half pound lighter after our encounter. :)

Just finished several hours of mud removal from every spot I could find. Sheesh that sucked.

Ask me how I know...

I've learned the hardway that you can't hit mud puddles that hard. You have to creep into them and then put the engine just below redline. :D

BTW your engine can suck in water only a small amount and still run, it will run like ****, but it can still keep chugging. And as far as the clutch, remove the inspection plate/flywheel cover thingy hose it, and then let dry before trying to drive. I'd say worst case your TO bearing is toasted.
