Tire shops around here keep telling me not to put 12.50's on my 8 inch rim, but i see this done all the time in peterson's. What is everyone's take on this. Is it safe, or should i just get new rims, when i buy my tires.

Hell, it don't really matter....it's just for my race car.

It can be done, but the center of the tread will wear out faster than the rest over time. Optimum rim size for a 12.50 is 10".

i am running 33x12.5x16in tires on 8in rims and the key to good tread life and even tread wear is to have them rotated and balanced every 3 to 5 thousand miles i have had mine for over a year and have 75-80 percent tread left and this is my daily driver i have put close to 20 thousand on mine

here is the problem with putting big tires on skinny wheels.
Back when i had a Blazer...... 4 days ago.... I had 33 X 12.50's on 7.5" factory allow wheels. They fit, but had a couple of issues.
1. They are a bitch to balance. It is very very hard to get the weights hammered in place. Not impossible, but damn hard.
2. Then, the biggest deal is that the wheel will tend to "travel" in the tire a bit. (side to side ) This is very noticeable in corners. Not crazy unsafe, but anyone who is not used to driving the vehicle will not like it. I aired my tires up to 45 psi (10 over ) to help "tighten" things up a bit and that helped. 8" wheels wont be as bad as mine, but you'll be fine. Good luck. TORI.

First question I have is what are you using the vehicle for? If it going to be used off road more often than onn road or about 50/50 and you dont want to blow sidewalls as often, then go with the 12.5 on the 8" rim. They work just fine. I know of plenty of people that have this setup and have yet to see an issue with abnormal wear. If you are going to be doing more city/freeway driving and only take the truck on the occasional dirt road, then go with the 10" rim.. Better road handeling, albeit hardly noticable, is about all that you could expect Your choice. I would deffinatley recomend the 8" for any type of semi-serious off road use tho.

I was running 10" rims on a 12.5" tire and my rims got beat to hell off road i would go with the 8" rim i know several people with this setup and have no problems with them. I went to a 14.5" tire on my 10" rim and is much better.

I ran 32x11.50's on the 7" wide factory alloys (should be about the same as running 12.50's on the 8" rim) for many years. I wore out 2 sets of tires and they never showed any sign of abnormal wear. I also switched to 10" rims and ran them with some 11.50 tires for awhile (until I put on bigger tires) and really did not notice any difference in the handling of the vehicle (this was using the same type of tires as run on the 7" rims).
Most of the guys in our 4x4 club (all trail vehicles, no show trucks here!) who run 12.50 tires prefer an 8" rim width and have never had any problems.

The tire shop might just be trying to get you to buy new rims from them............

I ran my 35x12.5 General Grabber MT's on the factiry 6.75" rim. They have well over 30,000 miles on them and they're still going strong. No abnormal wear either.

If you drive like a bat outta hell, then you'll have abnormal wear on any tire on any rim. Just a little reminder. You're not driving a sports car.

I have 35x14.50 SSR's on 15x8in. stock rims. I run the air pressure at 26psi so I can get good contact, plus I am able to let the pressure down to 10 psi when I am wheeling. I haven't popped a bead yet.

thanks everyone for all the help. I am going to stick with the 8's. I am getting my new tires next week. As soon as i finish rebuilding my 700r4, I will be back on the trail

Hell yah you can put 12.50's on 8 inch rim. i have 33x12.50's super swamper TSLs. A buddy has 36x12.50's on the stock rims too.
