what happens if you put a tire that is approved for 6.5 to 8 inch wide tires on the 8 inch wide rim.

does it affect performance

it will affect the look of the tire more than anything, a bead will hold better on the 6.5 wid rim when aired down...

Tire may end up shorter than actual spec size. It will be wide and short. Large, probably flat tread surface. May tend to wear on outsides of tire. Narrower rim will force tire to bulge more in teh center of the tread, and may be a little taller/narrower than planned.
