When a 203 goes bad.?.?.?.?. and I\'m pretty sure it gets worse

.....does it go bang when goin from reverse to drive or when takin off from a light or maybe when runnin through the gears. Or is it maybe the Turbo 350 or maybe somethin else. I don't think it's the motor mounts cuz on account the motor doesn't shift when goin from drive to reverse and vice versa. Any thoughts or concepts would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I forgot to mention the u-joints are fine as I checked and driveshaft is next to brand new. By the way, I forgot to mention that I feel the bang underneath my feet. It almost feels like bad mounts you know like when they bind up and then release with that bang. But like I said earlier the mounts appear to be fine. All the crashing and banging seems to be amidships.

Check the trans mount where the crossmember bolts to the tranny/tcase adapter. If that's loose, that heavy tcase could break the rear of the aluminum transmission. That happen to me twice, but I also did not have the brace from the tcase to the engine. IIRC you don't have that brace either, do ya?

Might check the bellhousing bolts, adapter bolts, adapter mounting bolts, flexplate /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

mine did all kinds of wierd crap like that when it finally went out, so I took it out and tore it apart and all the gears were toasted... /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif

Re: When a 203 goes bad.?.?.?.?.

I had a 203 in my 74 K20 that used to "skip" when you punched it at a red light,or under heavy load(like pushing snow)and it was the chain all stretched out--guess it didnt like the tourque of the 454 I had in it at the time.I got another 203,and it did nearly the same thing,so I finally bought a 205 case from a 72 vintage and swapped it in--no problems with that case except the shifter bolt broke off in the adapter after a few years.I think the second 203 was in ok shape,I'm fairly sure it was the shifter being out of adjustment that made it act up--it worked fine in the truck I pulled it from, someone said it might be the differential gears in the tailshaft that were bad,but I never looked--its still out in my shed where I put it 10+years ago... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: When a 203 goes bad.?.?.?.?.

I'd venture to say that what you are hearing is bad.

I have one here if you need one (unknown condition, but might be better than what you have).

Re: When a 203 goes bad.?.?.?.?.

Marv said he had one as well so maybe between the two of them one could make a single good one? What do ya think?

Re: When a 203 goes bad.?.?.?.?.

Tighten the pinion nut maybe , we both have 12 bolts , and mine was loose and made that noise/vibe , didn't find it until AFTER I got the Cv shaft (needed CV anyway) /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

BTW Allan , just to make you chuckle , those 4 degree shims I gave you and would never need , are just what I need for the new truck /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I blew the chain to bits but could still drive it, do you have a part time kit? Pop off the access hole and have a look inside, it might have something to say!

also I have a 27 spline 205 with adapter and shifters for sale......
