I have a 84' Blazer and do not have a catalytic converter, here in Utah if it was on there originally its gotta be on their to pass emmisions. Kinda dumb. Anyway just wanted to know when they started putting them on their Blazers(I hope after 84'). Any ideas.

catalytic converters hve been around since the mid 70's. i think you need one. My 85 Federal smog Blazer has one.

I believe 1978 was the last year for Blazer 4x4's with no Cats. I own a 1978 GMC jimmy,an original Arizona Truck w/ no cats, and no smog, Just PCV.I believe this is because 4x4's are"Off-Road Vehicles, and does not apply to 2wd's. I also believe other areas may have had different rules on smog back then,Like California. Just my .02. Later:k5:

My 88 Federal smog blazer came with no cats from the factory. Just went thru smog testing 2 months ago and passed with flying colors without cats.

As I understood it, vehicles with a GVWR over 6000 didn't need cats until '79.

My '77 had a GVWR of 6200 and had no emmissions equipment on it.

Thanks for all the replies.

The guy I bought it from put on a 3" Flowmaster exaust, it sounds killer. Does a cat rob any power?

Not enough for you to tell any difference. The new cats are pretty free flowing so they do not do much in the way of hindering exhaust flow.

Old cats and mufflers are pretty restrictive.

Sometime in the 90's catalytic converter and muffler technology becamse a lot better and replacing/removing either didn't help much.

Put a 3" high flow cat on it, you won't notice any power difference and maybe a slight change in exhaust note.

You'll definitely need a cat to pass emissions in Utah, unless you know somebody.

Well depending on where in Utah you are. Since I live out in Tooele county I don't have to deal with the emissions, and I will not be adding the cat back onto mine. It is only required in four or five counties, but yes they started putting them on all of the Blazers in 79. In addition you may also need a AIR pump, EGR, and other emissions equipment to pass.

On the plus side it is nice to start seeing more Utah people post up.

I just want to echo the comment that its nice to see people here from Utah.:D

I bought my Blazer from a guy in Utah county & it passed safety & emmissions just last March their. I live in Salt Lake City so I'll figure out some way to do it. lectric80 any good wheelin in Toole? I always go to the "B" in Bountifull, but I live in Magna & Toole is really close. bigblock72 where do you go for wheelin?

The cats quieted my exhaust down a lot.

Get an older cat and gut it put it on your ride. Then you won't have any restrictions before your exhaust it will be all for looks.

Better yet move to a county that does not require smog! Like Mojave County!:D

I have used the 3" high flow cat, there is a slight difference in performance, but is almost unnoticable.

I only know it had some effect because it was on my wifes Z28 and the car picked up about 2/10 in the quarter mile.

But you have a 4x, don't worry none. Look them up in one of the mail orders and end your worries about it.

my '82 has a cat. i replaced it last year, actually.

the old cats were big and full of pellets that packed in, got broken, melted or gunked up and really killed flow. the monolithics, like any new vehicle will have, are much freer flowing, smaller, and work better. having seen a few on flowbenches, they really don't hurt flow much at all. the po of my blazer gutted the old cat and the exhaust sounded all farty. when i put a new monolithic on there for emissions testing, the fart sound went away and i noticed absolutely no loss of power.
