I heard a massive bang. This was while i was at speed, i had my foot into it and then let completely off and there was a loud bang then it coasted. Thought i broke something in the driveline, look behind me to see if i lost anything, but i didnt. gave it gas again and it moved. it still drives fine, but i can repeat the noise, its really loud and doesnt sound good, and it only happens when im up to speed. just cruising around the neighborhood its not noticeable.

Only thing i can think of is there is too much backlash in the rear axle and when i let off the gas the ring catches the pinion (thats just coasting) and smacks it. I did notice there is quite a bit of backlash on the rear axle.

Does this sound possible or is there anything else that would cause this? I can go through all the gears of the tranny at lower speeds and they all function properly, and the t-case is just in 2h. Driveshaft is like new so this is my only possible solution...:dunno:

Pull the cover and look? Do you have a locker in the rear end?

yea it has a locker. would that make it act this way?

Mechanical locker like a detroit , lock rite or a grizzly will pop and bang. usually sounds like a gunshot outside the truck.

Thats normal. and it is normal for them to have excessive backlash too.

But if it was a gov lock, it should not do that, and you are going to need a new one.

Yeah if you have a locker it will Make a ton of noise when getting on and off the gas. It can have more backlash than normal. The inner gear if it is a Detroit moves almost 20 degrees before engaging. Not sure about the rest though. Only way to check backlash is to open the diff and check that way and see if something is up or has metal shavings.

I wondered if it had to do with the locker, well i will check that out, thanks everyone :thumb:

Not to stir the pot but I have a Detroit in the rear of my dd and it hardly ever makes a sound. Had it for 3 years now driven every day and I can count on one hand the number of times of heard it bang.

Now, I do have a light clunking sound from getting on and off the throttle because of the slack in the locker but its barely noticeable and it does it no matter what my speed is so if you're having a "massive bang" and you can recreate it only at certain speeds I would definitely pull the cover and check it out.

Of the times my locker has made loud banging sounds it was not repeatable, for example once it popped while I was making a 3 point turn and had to shift between forward and reverse while turning but it popped once during the turn and doesn't do it every time I make a multi point turn.

yea i am definitely going to look into it, im hoping its backlash and not the locker, because it was a really loud noise, to the point i thought i lost the trans or something haha. and i wasnt turning or anything. but we will see, thanks for the tips :thumb:

Hopefully it's nothing wrong as I've seen some loose lockers do this. It could be getting worn out and popping worse than normal. Mine chunked out the inner gear teeth at some point after a good burnout and it released hard. Best to look it over good to make sure if its gotten worse.

Bringing this thread back up because the k5 is coming out of storage in a few weeks and this will be my first problem.

Here are picture of the rear dif (looks to be a locker):

From what i can tell, this is a locker unit, but not the Gov bomb. Correct me if i am wrong. I know the axle had some type of limited slip/locker in it, because with both wheels off the ground and if you turn one, the other turns the same direction. I did notice there was more backlash that normal, but as stated above this may be because of the locker (I have never worked with one before so IDK). The noise was right after i let off the gas, and in my opinion it is much louder than a locker should act, i thought the trans broke off the engine or something, it was LOUD. So i know this is not right.

What is my first plan of attack? Is there any way to tell if it is backlash or the locker unit? And if it is the locker unit, is the only fix to replace it?

Are you sure you aren't wrapping up broken leaf springs?

Be advised they can be very hard to spot sometimes. My rig had 4 broke springs when I bought it. I never knew until she $h!+ one of the rear blocks and two spring on a trail one day.

i just finished building the entire rig myself so i had the springs apart and painted them, none were cracked :waytogo: but thats a good thought.

Sure it's not a backfire? Mine does that sometimes after I'm on it hard then release the throttle quickly.

Nah it wasnt a backfire, and it was like a quick snap of the throttle, i had it at like 3-4k for 30 seconds travelling down a hill, and then when i let up to coast, i heard the loud bang. Thats why i thought differential, because i was coasting down the hill and my theory is that when i let off the throttle, the pinion slowed down and the ring gear basically caught up to it and smacked the coast side because there was so much back lash. Whether this is possible or not, im not sure. But i did just build the whole rig and there arent many places that i could see the noise coming from..

When I let off the gas.....

The room clears out.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Rear end gears gets my vote. I have seen them do it and the drive shift can make it sound worse.

alright, thanks. Seems like that should be my first area to look at. about 3 more weeks til it comes out of storage :thumb:
