Do I need to buy a new spring pin that will go all the way through the shim and into the spring perch?

From my experiance,if you have aftermarket springs the spring pins are long enough to go through the shim and into the perch. If not,new pins are cheap enough :D

Oh ya, if I recall when I put the 14ff on I had to trim the pins down to get the springs to sit flush on the perch.

If the pins did not go all the way through, what would happen? Could the axle move around even if the u bolts were torqued down properly??
