And you thought this was gonna be good?

My rig is still rockin the O-riginal, ( and not really operational) AM/FM CASSETTE player along with original speakers. For the first 1000 miles after the buildup I wasn't interested in playing tunes, just listening to see if the rig had any bad news for me. Now I want tunes. Seeing as I went to all the trouble to beef this thing up, a standard raadio prolly won't cut it.

I am looking for a radio, navigation, and communication system. All in one. I found 3 systems on crutchthingy site that are single din and have a 7 inch pop out screen (aka prone to breakage?) Ez install (with just a little carving) plus I can answer when the wife calls, look at nav screen to know how far from home I might be, give her an eta, all without setting down my beer or taking my other hand off of the wheel.

Any input on makes and models of such newfangled electronics would be appreciated.

Well, I have a single DIN Kenwood here that a guy took put of his '90 because it blocked the heat/ac controls too much when the screen was out. And it would run into the shifter when you put it into gear before it was all of the way deployed. And it wasn't in a great view area anyway.

I was thinking that the stock location could be problematic. Would not have thought the shifter would have been in the way though. Out of curiosity, what would it take for me to have that one laying here? Perhaps an alternate location exists that I could live with?

Thanks for the info.p

What I had found was that I would start the truck, throw it in gear as the screen was in motion, which then would bump it and send it back home.
I will get the model number and PM you with more info.

But I tossed my casettes a while ago.. lol That would be the ez way to go for sure for install. Wife suggested to "just take the Bluetooth speaker". Options are limitless these days.

I honestly like having a good head unit and being able to use CD's or digital media capabilities. As far as navigation or DVD, I don't care. If I need navigation, I can use my phone. If I drove something for more time, I would have satellite radio, so that I would have a variety available without using data on the phone.... but that has options too.

I currently have the crappy cig inverter to an even crappier boombox on the back seat. Even the bluetooth is high tech for me. My old lady wont even get in my truck so there's that. Says it stinks like hell.

I've got a regular Kenwood single din deck in mine and even without a screen comes out the view to it from the driver's seat sucks. I can't imagine trying to see a nav screen down there. Between the steering wheel and the shifter you got no line of sight. Plus that area takes your eyes off the road too much. I've found I use mine by feel mostly.

You probably need to look for another solution. The Tuffy deluxe security console has a din sized opening. Here's a look at mine with a CB in it.

There is a lid that covers it that locks with the main lid. It's still a bad location for taking your eyes off the road while driving but it's better all around than in the stock dash location.

For my k5 I'm thinking about using a fusion head unit since they are easy to see, not a ton of controls on the display but have Bluetooth and sound great
Then I'll get a garmin gps and mount to the roll cage or on the dash
Having a display by the stock radio is unsafe
They make one with a dash cam / backup camera that looks interesting

Now that you mention it, I recall having the same sound set up in one of my first cars :saweet:

As far as the stink goes... not sure I could put up with that either if it's as bad as you say she says it is.

H20, I looked at the fusion units. They have some neat units. Definitely like the big and simple controls. Probably have to pull over to change anything but the volume with the phone control units. Thanks for the tip
