Typically GM has them on the passenger side axle tube, facing forward, about midway between the wheel and center section.
Good luck making any meaning out of them...GM changed the codes virtually every model year (at least in the 80's) so even the service manuals (which do list them IIRC) for an '81 would likely ahve incorrect codes for an '82.
It's a perfect excuse to change your diff lube. Pull the cover, rotate the ring gear until you find the stamped in numbers, and you'll be certain what ratio it is, plus you'll know it's in good shape and has good fluid. There are many posts that show the method of deceiphering the ring gear stamps.
