Where is your spare located?

Hey useyourblinker:
Did you move the rear seat forward? I want to mount a 33 ich spare in the back, but I'm afraid it won't fit! What did you do?

I'm no physics major either...

50/50 is good for flying though...
I just always assumed my truck was front heavy so I thought i'd share. I don't mind having a heavy truck, I just don't want all the weight up high so I think I understand what you're getting at. As it is right now my spare tire carrying options are pretty open, so I may just see what ideas come up.

You just have to manuver the tire a little bit. The tailgate closes, and the rear seat is in the stock location. People can still sit in the backseat with the spare in the stock location...It will fit!

I am gonna go with 35's later on in the future but I will have to find another spot for the spare tire also! A 33 spare is the biggest I could fit with keeping the rear seat.

Here's mine

Might be the setup your looking for.
I love it. The only thing is that I didn't bolt my box to the floor instead I ratchet strap it down. It makes for easier removal for when I need to use my spare.

WHEELIN' IS NOT A HOBBY. . . IT'S A LIFESTYLE.

right now mine is in my garage. when i go wheelin i throw it in the back. dont carry it when i drive city b/c i am never too far from home.
but steve what about putting yours in the load warrior up top?

Well, I raked my brain for hours before I came up with the perfect setup. Its a custom made spare tire swing away rack with jerry can mounts and a spot for a jackall! Its perfect. .... sorry I couldnt resist. All the talk about making the best design for a rear tire rack, now the fad is to move them back inside the truck? Seriously, does it make that much difference? Its only 200 lbs. What kind of problems did you run into at Moab with it on the back? Could you remove the tire and run the same trails to see if the obstacles that hindered you were conquered with the tire off? If it was just damage from the bumps, maybe a sturdier mount like Depdog has would better support it? Also, what kind of departure angle do you need to attain??? My tire is so high, that if I were to touch the tire to the ground, it would be way too late anyways. What if you fabbed a quick release way to remove the tire for the obstacle that you are facing, then slap it back on as soon as you passed the problem?
I just cant picture any situation where I would want the tire back inside the truck. Let us in on the reasoning Steve!

Steve,
Well, since you asked, the back seat from my CJ measures 35 inches across. The backseat in the K5 measured in at 49. Something to think about.

I don't think because I want to move the tire inboard for clearance that it is the latest fad, but maybe I can start something.
smile.gif

The last two trips to Moab sent the tire carrier into the tailgate and on Pritchard Canyon I got hung up on it while trying to climb a very steep angle, yes the UAV gets wheeled.
Even Depdog has broken his before so I know I am not the only one. I want a solution that I don't have to mess with on the trail, I could put it up higher etc. but I want to be able to backup in tight spaces right up against my rear bumper, I have been running tighter and tigher trails and need to make the K5 as small as posiable.
Also, when on washboard roads having the spare on the bumper feels like someone is jumping up and down on my bumper, I can really feel the weight of the tire moving up and down. I do like the space savings of having it on the outside but want it to be as good as it can be off-road first, I still plan on keeping the rear seat.
A lot of people bob their rigs to make them shorter for the trail, I can bob mine like 18" just by moving the spare inside.

"I just cant picture any situation where I would want the tire back inside the truck. Let us in on the reasoning Steve!" Come out to Moab and I will show you.

Steve, didnt mean any bad feelings towards ya, and you have no idea just how much Id love to get to Moab to see! I guess I see why youd want to shorten the truck, but I think its Depdogs new setup that has the upper swivel for support after he broke it a while ago.
Good luck with the plans.

No bad feelings Mike, just wanted to let you know my reasoning, another point to would be when you drove off a 4 foot stair you are going to drag the rear bumper and anything you have hanging off the back, when I drove over white knuckle hill I got hung up on the bolt that goes through the bumper to hold the carrier on, you can get hung up on anything really even a 2" receiver hitch. I plan on installing a nice cage and running without a top and 1/2 doors in the summer, that way if I have to I can drag the cage against rocks. I plan on pushing the UAV as hard as I can and want to be able to keep the damage to a minimum.

maybe you could carry the spare on the back for daily driving and then fold the back seat up and throw the spare back there when you wheel. I'd like to see what you come up with. The only place otherwise that I can figure would be on the top.

high and tight and light as possible.
now its the k5's that are deciding what mod is next...

my next big project is to bob the tail 13" and mount the spare on the back of the cage; probably laying close to vertical.
i will keep the geri can and jack, but remove the extra weight of the bumper/carrier.
will keep the original tail lighting, but remove the rear seating, original tank, and skid.
plastic fuel cell and gear box will take up rear space.
remove the doors and softop, run a bikini top only, and i think i can shed another 500 lbs., lightening the k5 to 4300 lbs.

good luck steve,

Now were talkin, I want to keep my rear seat though but plan on rinolining and loosing the tail gate all together with half doors and mounting the spare to the cage, this way in the winter I can still put everything back on. Funny, I will go from running a hard top year round to running a soft top in the winter only - maybe.
Good luck on the bob, send pics to update.

Before I got my rear bumper mount I carried my spare on the front bumper for about 2 years with no problems. Of course that was before the winch bumper and winch.

The best place I've found for a spare is in the back of someone else's pickup. We usually do the community spare thing.

When I carry one, it's either standing up or laying down behind the rear seat, depending on how much stuff I'm carrying.

As for the 2" receiver, mine kills me. I get really hung up on it, to the point where I can't back up. Happened a couple times on Rusty Nail.

What about on your Can-Back roof rack?? A 38.5 would be a heavy haul, but you are always with friends when wheeling! Plus it would get it up out of the way, but then it would take away from your center of gravity and make you a tad tippier.......

I wheel with a friend that has a 78 K5 with a swing spare carrier mounted to the rear bumper. He dropped off a ledge and sheared the swing out and spare right off. This picture is another reason you don't want to put the tire on the back.

I plan on making a braced reciever mount that I can run in the receiver on the bumper when I'm doing an over nighter. Then for day trips I will have a receiver right behind the rear seat to mount the tire vertically like I have it now.
