Where to buy starter

Given my recent starting problems, I've started looking at which starter to buy. The consensus seemed to lean towards a gm starter. My problem is that I can't find one at any of the local parts stores (checker, advance, autozone, napa, carquest). The only two places I've found so far are the dealer ($200) and gmpartsdirect ($140 shipped). I could do gmpartsdirect, but then it becomes a pain if I need warranty coverage. Checker sells a brand new Ultima starter for $100 and Napa stuff is usually good, but if these aren't going to be quality I don't want to waste my time.

Basically I'm confused and need to know what you guys would do.

why not just buy one from the local parts store with a lifetime warranty? they should be able to get what you want

The problem there is if it's a crappy starter, it doesn't matter if you get free crappy replacements, you're still inconvenienced in R&Ring the damn things all the time.

And your friends look at you funny when you pull a 2x4 out from your truck to whack the starter solenoid free. BTDT.

For the OP, sadly, you get what you pay for. The last one I bought from GM -- which was, admittedly, years ago -- was maybe $100. This was materially more than the parts houses were getting ... but I haven't had to touch it. :deal:

You might also see if there's an alternator / electric motor shop locally. They are a dying breed, but there's a guy local to me who does DC motors, starter, alternator ... rebuilt my winch motor, great stuff.

Sounds like I'm springing for the one from gmpartsdirect.
I looked for a local shop but couldn't find one (unless anyone knows one near Boulder, co).

The last starter I purchased was a brand new Hitachi over a year ago for my 98 Silverado. So far no problems, it cost with tax close to $250 CDN. I think.

I bought the ac delco starter from the dealer about 10 yrs ago for a 305. It was so cheap. It shattered the cassing around the teath and was toast only after abuot 2yrs.

The other starter I have for a 350 was bought about 20 yrs ago and is rock solid. I would rebuilt it if it were to wear out.

big differnance in casting with the starters

I got a Summit Racing house brand mini-hi torque starter around $100. It's great and has more crank power and uses less amps. Love it.
