I just picked up an 85 blazer and I want to chop the top off. I dont have any intention of converting it to a full top I just want it to look right when I cut the top off. Any one have some pics of where they cut thiers. If you chopped again would you do it different?

Ok, I chopped the top off and left some xtra to make it look nice. What are you guys using to "finish" the edge where the cut is? Should I tack weld the inner and outer halves of the roof together? Man I cant believe nobody has replied???? I guess nobody likes me

I was hoping to see someone elses to get an idea how to do it. I am sure I can figure it out but there is so many ingenious tricks on here.

I wish I had the balls to cut my top off. Can we see some pics and then maybe we can give you ideas. I don't know what the edge looks like but you could prolly bondo around the cut to give it a nice rounded edge.

No pics for you guys cause I am a tight ass and dont have full membership.:doah: I know, I know dont ride my a**. One day I will pony up. There is an inner and outer roof about 2 inches apart.

Well, it does show you as a member. Besides, you don't need to be a member to post pictures.

Sign up for a photobucket account (free), upload your pictures, then click on the "IMG code" box for the picture you want to post. That will copy the link you need, then simply paste it here and that's it.

I was thinking if you made a pretty straight cut you could fill inbetween the two pieces with bondo and round it off to make it look all pretty. You might want to make a frame for the bondo though so its not so thick.

I know about the write up on the conversion, I am not looking to do it that way. I dont ever plan on putting a top back on it. I live in the desert and it almost never rains. Plans are rollcage and a bimini as needed. I just dont want the noggins to get chopped up out wheeling.

i think the bondo idea is very bad. these windshield frames flex like nobody's business, so i'd bet that after a good wheelin trip, it'd be all cracked out. i think your best bet is taking in a cap.

maybe some thin wall square tube, or even round tube, weld it in, the ends will be a pain with the curves, but you will add some strength and be able to kind of round off those sharp edges.

I don't think the windshield frame will flex that much. But now that i've seen a picture I would say just weld in some flat stock or even square or round tube like mentioned b4 to make it look all pretty.

when i drive my '73 with the stock full convertible window frame, it moves significantly enough to see. not super visible, but enough to tell. bondo doesn't need visible flex to crack.

theres one running around here that they just recently cut the top of of and they used rollbar padding and duct tape

Myself i'd just weld a piece of flat steel or sheetmetal on and try and smooth the corners. Also i'd try and figure out a way to add some kinda strength to it cause that can't be very strong now.

A full cage is in the plans, but I want it to look I gave a shizz and give it a finished look. Flat bar is a pretty good idea.

I plan on doing the same thing soon. I was kinda thinking of maybe cutting the bottom layer shorter than the top. Then, folding the top down and ribbiting it in or something along those lines... Not really sure how that will work out... but we will see.

I think that bending over the top layer would be a super pain, but if you have the patince:rolleyes:. The edges are going to be the hard part.
