i replaced my steering wheel with a grant a little bit ago, where the contact plate makes contact to the wheel it doesn't ground out because the grant wheel is painted, so i took it off and sanded it down.. the ground(horn) wire touched the center splined hub(nut) and the horn sounded for a second, then went out.. i have 2 bad boy electric horns in replace of my factory horn so it's pulling alittle more juice but not much..
1. i check the fuse (still good)
2. i replace the relay(still no horn)
3. i hard wire the horns(horns work)
4. i test voltage at the horn fuse at the panel.. and get 12v on both sides
5. i pull the horn relay(3 pin) next to the hazard flash and get 12v on one pin, ground on one pin and that leaves me with the other pin connecter supposed to go to the wire at the steering wheel (i assume).
6. so i continunity check from the horn wire to the pin and nothin.

i have a feeling somewhere in the column i've lost contact with the wire or it came loose or melted in the column somewhere.. i want to continunity check different parts of this wire
..so my question is... from the steering wheel where does this horn wire come down under the dash so i can continuity check it? anyone know what color it is coming from this horn relay panel and if it's the same color going all the way up the column(black)?

ok wait a minute.. re-reading my post i realized that there is no "horn wire" but the brass tabs that the pin goes in.. when i first installed my grant wheel the wheel didn't line up with the plastic sleeve so i ended up trashing the metal pin, the spring, the plastic sleeve.. and soldering a wire onto the brass tab, then painting it with liquid electrical tape so it doesn't ground out on the "star plate" or the grant wheel mount bracket.. yes the connection is good... i've checked it and even pulled the plastic dust cover off of the (face) of the column where there's 4 brass pins and a metal star looking plate(don't know the name of it but i've heard it before)... i continuity checked the end of my wire to the brass tabs just to be sure and it works so i know my solder connection is good..

can you go to the relay and test the ground to the horn button
you should have nothing, press button and you get your ground
that at least tests everything in the column

I did that... And my problem IS from the horn button to the relay... Just not sure if its at the relay side or in the column... I don't know which wire it is

well, a chilton manual will help a lot here

I believe the horn wire is in the grouping that plugs into the column just under the column support mount. There are two ~1"x1" plugs next to each other on top of the column. You'll just have to chase down the right one or poke one and check the horn button.

I see the horns work, but where did you feed the power? From the relay? I'd also check the turn signal cam and the horn plate on top of it. I wish I knew more, but when I did re-wired my truck, all the factory stuff was ripped out...including the column guts.

so i ended up cutting alot of electrical tape to trace some other wires and found that off of the horn relay there's a white and black wire,, black goes to the steering wheel.. the loom goes up over the gauges and down the left behind the fuse block then up to the column.. i continunity checked the black from under the column to the relay pin an i have contact.. then i check to the horn wire and have no contact.. so my issue is in the column somewhere... i have never taken a column apart and from the threads i've searched i don't really want to yet just for a horn wire... does anyone know where the wire meets the brass plate that the spring and pin attach to for the wheel? i have a feeling that's where my problem is.. is there any way i can "fish" a new wire down the column to attach to my horn button?

the horn wire is part of the turn signal cam IIRC
just take the steering wheel off and get a "steering lock" remover tool (rent on from autozone, free I think)
take the top plate off by compressing the spring (easy) You don't have to remove hardly anything to get to ALL the horn related things.
