If your alt doesn't charge well, you do have a problem in either system. :doah:
I know... but when the tranny is bad the alternator isn't the biggest priority at this point. My plan is to fix it by converting to 12V. I already have a new gear reduction 12V starter (half the price of a rebuilt 24V stock starter too ;))

Half the price and quarter the life of a 24V starter :wink1:

OK we got it.
24v is better, but if I had to do it right, I would get a 24v alternator, and I would have everything 24v, not a funky 12v/24v system.
I worked on bigger diesel trucks and I agree 24v is so much stronger and last longer.

Yep, that should be the way to go. A bit costly though . . .
Maybe that's why the government only did a half conversion. All of the 24v stuff is expensive but longlasting.

Good thing is, you can help yourself with USED 24v stuff from the big rigs (heater, winch, lights, compressor) which is relatively cheap - at least here in germany. :wink1:

:eek1: :eek1: WOW, half the price of a rebuild. :eek1: :eek1:

I paid $125 for a complete rebuild on my 24v starter a few weeks ago, and that price includes the new nose cone that had to be put on it.

If you got a "new" starter for $70, good luck on it lasting :doah: :doah: :haha:

More like $85 but its 100% new and GM components from a 6.5L. Never heard anyone having any more trouble with them than any other stock GM starter. The 24V starter in my M1028 has 35K original miles and already has issues.

Any decent alternator/starter shop will be able to rebuild it. They work on 24v stuff for big trucks all of the time.
