Which FI motor

I am looking at swapping the carb 350 that i have right now for a Fuel Injected model. Question is which one. I am kinda clueless on it and was wondering if there were any good resources for this type of swap. Anyone else have any input that has already done this type of swap?
 
The easiest would be a TBI from an 87 up truck. Depending on your engine you can also just swap the TBI components to your truck.
 
also look for a car tbi motor if you can. thay come with roller cam stuff in them. truck motor all the same but no roller cam from factory for some reason.

if you know what cam you have you can have a chip burnt for it if its within the limits of the computers range.

i swapped to tbi, if i were to do it again i would do a tpi with maf sensor



Absolutely the way to go:D

Throttle response is unreal. Pulls like a diesel and gets about 12MPG on the highway.

IMO tbi isnt even worth the effort when TPI is out there.

You didn't say if you had the base motor to build, or if starting from scratch.

For all the time and money you invest no matter which way you go, an LSx is going to net the best power, economy, etc. Going to take more time and effort than TBI or TPI, and *up front* cost is more, but no small block comparably built, is going to make as much power, as efficiently, as an LS motor will.
 
What kind of budget are you looking at?
You can convert to FI for a few hundred bucks if you find good deal on stock TBI
Or you can pay 800-2000+ for aftermarket stuff
TBI is the cheapest easiest way to FI.
TPI costs more but is pretty much a similar swap as TBI.
There are many aftermarket kits on the market also. Edelbrock, Holley, Acell, howell, and many others make complete bolt on FI kits.

Are you going to use the engine you have or build/buy a complete engine?

this would have been my choice
 
I've got an FJ40 project vehicle with an LS-1 engine.

They are great engines, but you will need either the original LS-1 harness modified, or buy a custom harness.

You also will need the computer reprogrammed to delete a bunch of stuff.

The LS-1's require much more fuel pressure (50 psi, IIRC) than a late 80's TBI engine needs, which means a different fuel pump.

Exhaust system is another issue.

In terms of power, economy and "coolness factor", the LS-1 (or it's siblings) wins hands down. When you price all that custom stuff compared to the cost of a 350 or 454 TBI motor it will bring you back to reality.

If you decide to go with an LS-1, there are some differences. They were installed in Corvettes, Camaros and Firebirds.

The Corvette versions used an electronic accelerator pedal input to the throttle body (as opposed to a cable input on the Camaro/ Firebird).

The Corvette engines have a "bat-wing" style oil pan that is not deep, but gets its volume by cavities at the sides as opposed to a sump. This allows the engine to be mounted lower and get a lower center of gravity for the vehicle.

The accessories (PS, AC compressor, alternator), are mounted differently on the Corvette engines. IIRC, the alternator is mounted lower on the Camaro/Firebird engines.
