Which helmet?

simply depends on how much welding you think you're going to be doing. if you're going beyond garage goofball go for the faster switching helmet. there IS a difference.

Not one of your criteria but the second hood doesn't list sensor quantity which I find to be a big deal. Sometimes with lesser count of sensors, you can get your self in a spot welding underneath a rig or around a cage where you will block the light from the sensors and then you might as well weld without the hood on. More sensors is better for odd position welding.

Outside that, I'd go with the first one of the two.

The Jackson sounds good for the money and to learn. The other doesn't have the capability for sensitive work at all. Just remember if there is any strobe lights going off within your hood's field of sensors the strobe will activate your hood. Also the solar recharging doesn't mean much unless your welding for feet. Might be a good idea to have a few spare sets of batteries handy. My heavy hood is a 9000x speedglas rebreather, it takes the smaller cr3062 (watch style) batteries. I can go about a month on one set (welding 8 - 10 hours per day) before it starts to flicker. When it switches between shielded and ready 2-3 times per second (flicker) that's when its time to change the batteries.

sweet

Just bought the Jackson. Can't wait to try out my welding skilz :)

How is Home Depot for wire? It's the closest and easiest place to get that stuff from. I've got an ACE also, otherwise I'll look in the phone book for any specialty shops.

Wow
I was just reading a “newer” welding hood thread and asking myself “what do I have?”

LOL
And there’s the answer except it looks like the website is no more.

I wouldn't mind going to that Viking 3350 but concerned about the battery. It’s replaceable but is it chargeable? Meaning, I’ve needed to stop and put some new AAA batteries in to continue a project. Wish good quality helmets still used AAA batteries so down time isn’t long.

I have a Digital Infinity. Worth every penny back when I bought it. No frustration when welding outdoors and the viewing area is huge so you don't have to move your head all the time.

Like everything ITW sells, the price is way up (like 30%) from a couple years ago.
