I don't think it matters. As long as the bleeder screws face up. When you have them facing forward, the left is on the right and the right is on the left....something to rember if you have to buy a single caliper (although it's best to replace calipers in pairs).
I put mine facing back so the front of the axle protects it against debris, plus it looks cool from behind. At the same time it will collect debris into the caliper easier, so I believe it's owners preference. I know ford f-250's have it facing forward on their factory discs

yeah i was thinking facing towards the back too, i think being that way you get more torque braking and less axle wrap when braking?? thats my thought at least i could be wrong?
Most vehicles I've seen with 4-wheel discs run the rears open to the rear, and the fronts open toward the front.....that is, the rear caliper is hung in front of the rear axle, and the front caliper is hung behind the front axle.
