I'm currently in the market for a K5. The problem is I don't know year to buy. Which is the best overall year?

87 or newer for fuel injection 90 or newer you get a 700 (if its auto) and a 241 case,

all those can be added at a later date so for me the best years are 73-75 because the whole top comes off

agreed 73-75 full vert is sweet, converting to fuel injection is easy

87 or newer for fuel injection 89 or newer you get a 700 (if its auto) and a 241 case (only year of 241 with mechanical speedo),

Fixed it for ya. :D

69' to 75' are the best years hands down.

to each his own, thats pretty much up to you. full verts are nice, as are the rest of them tho. find one in decent shape and go for it.

if your anything like me, the year doesnt really matter. mine is a 90 Jimmy and im in the middle of a huge rebuild/upgrade. the only things thatll be original are engine, front clip, and interior.

I'm partial to the '83-'91 range. But the general consensus on here will be to get either a first gen('69-'72) or a full top 2nd gen('73-'75). Either way, they are all cool and whatever K5 you get will be a good choice. We will still welcome you to the Brotherhood no matter what year K5 you get.

Really depends on your intended use. Style wise I like the 1st gens. For an option loaded comfortable daily driver it would be an 88-91. To build one for trails or mud I would go with 73-79.

While I am new as well overall to the k5 world my vote would be for 1st gen and early 73-75 2nd gen. Being able to take off the whole top is just plain cool. But to each their own and I agree as well that all k5's are cool so no matter what you'll end with a sweet truck.
