I have an 84 k5, with currently stock 3.08 open 10 bolts, but i got a gov bomb for free, and a lock right for cheap. i was planning on putting the lock right in the back, and the gov bomb up front for now, just to make her a little more capable and see what happens lol. i know the 10 bolts are weak, as are the gov bombs, but it is only a temporary upgrade, as i will be getting a d60 14b combo probably next year.

i just wanted to double check with the experts to make sure i shouldnt switch and put the lock right in the front for some reason.

thanks in advance,
Grant

Ahhhh, I'm interested to see what others would say. I ran an eaton posi up front once and was happy with it, but I've seen gov locks act unpredictable and I wouldn't want that on ice or snow

i wouldnt waste time with the gov loc,and leave the front open.lockright will work nice in the rear.should make the case stronger and hopefully last in the rear.

gov loc up front, loc right in rear. you wont be in 4wd as much (so the govloc is less likely to break up front than if it were in the rear).

if you plan to get a 60/14 combo, i wouldnt really waste my time messin with the 10b's, just run them as is, they will likely last the longest the way they are than if you add posi/locker units.

thanks, for the advice, i think ill stick to the original plan. i know that they are not worth spending lots of money on, but like i said, the gov bomb was free, and the lock right was only 70 bucks. I only run 33s, and am not that abusive on it.

also, you were right, i will not spend that much time in 4wd, especially not on the road.

lock right rear

front open.

alll im seeing out of the front gov lock is spinning tire, gov lock engage and either break, or shaft breaks. i wouldnt want that kind of sudden jolt on a 10b front.

this is a comon topic the last few months again :doah:

search gov loc front and find lots of pro's and cons.

basicly bad life span in 10 bolt / 12 bolt / 9.5 semi 14 bolt.

then you need to reseat the gears in the front to install one. then it will go boom. and have to do it all over again.

i use to run locked rear and open front on 1tons and 38" tires in a 6500 lbs truck. never let me down to much as long as i used my head and went threw stuff i knew i could and had a backup plan just incase.

I ran a Gov-loc in the front for awhile, about 3 trips out, it sucked, didn't work like i wanted it to. Removed it and stuck a Loc-rite in there, been there ever since, about 5 years now.

This is interesting info, good to hear from people with first hand experience.

I was considering doing the same; I figured it might help with mud & snow... but it's not sounding like it's that good of an idea anymore.

Now I'm leaning towards Tru-Trac front & Detroit (or soft locker) rear, after I find a new rear axle. Gotta get rid of the spindly 10 bolt first!
