Which magazine(s)?

I want to subscribe to a 4x4 or offroad magazine - are any of 'em worth it or are they more like the car rags, inflated numbers on advertiser's donated parts and combos?

I get the usual suspects (Peterson's 4Wheel & Off Road and Four Wheeler) as well as Classic Trucks, Custom Classic Trucks, Rod & Custom, Street Rodder, and whatever else looks interesting...

It's nice to see the other stuff sometimes.
 
I've had 'em to quite a few of the performance magazines, I like Chevy High Performance best. I'm thinking about re-subscribing and can generally get a second subscription to another of the same family of publications and get a good discount.
I've learned a lot from this place, got a lot of good ideas about how I want to set my truck up, but I know there are a lot of helpful how-to articles in the better magazines. I don't intend to get hardcore, just a little bit of crawling and some mudhole roostertails.
I have a real Jones to return to my boyhood days and play in the dirt and mud, 'cept with bigger toys this time around :D

I prefer the non-4x4 mags because my K5 (once it's back on the road) will be a street truck 99.9999999999% of the time. Probably 100%, but I want to be able to go off road. Right now, I'm not planning any lift, or bigger tires, etc, although eventually those things will be slightly upgraded.

But I find the products advertised in 4x4 magazines are geared strictly toward off-road performance, often with little to no thought behind aesthetics.

All the really cool aftermarket toys are for sale in the "custom" magazines. I'm building my truck as a keep-it-forever truck, so it makes sense to me to add in some new-car-tech to make it more comfortable.

Edit: Chevy High Performance rocks, and the quarterly "Engine Masters" series from Popular Hot Rodding is something I wait for every 3 months.
 
Interesting, jonrpick, my K-5 will see 95% street use as well. I'd been stuck between making it into an offroad toy or reliable daily driver with capability to get me to some trout streams from time to time when this '78 shortwide 4x4 popped up. Now I can have 'em both!
If you want good engine advice and plenty of info, www.chevelles.com is the best place on the net. Plenty of helpful guys with a lot of real-world experience. I get to hang out at a high performance shop (Sunset Racecraft) and have had the opportunity to watch 1200+ hp N/A engines on the dyno. I've learned enough to know how to choose parts and how to assemble them correctly. Now I'm ready to learn about 4x4 gear and what combos are best for different situations, too.
My other project is an '81 Corvette 4-speed that will have it's numbers matching engine and tranny mothballed in favor of a 438 (stroked LS 427) and TKO-600. It should be a low 10-second car with great street manners and get around 25mpg. This should be the last hotrod I ever have to build...but it won't be! :D

Yeah, I luckily avoided the high-performance bug by being broke. :D

I got it out of my system without going through it, and know what I want, functionally and cosmetically.

Basically I plan to upgrade the heat and A/C with an aftermarket unit, all electrically controlled to eliminate the vacuum lines and cables, and that'll let me put the controls in the custom console I plan to build. Oh yeah, I'm thinking of opting for the digital climate controls for it. :pimp:

Little things like that won't be noticeable by most folks, but it'll make an old vehicle feel a bit more like new.

Among the other items:

Powered/heated seats
7" LCD radio/CD/DVD/NAV setup (in the console too) which interfaces with a carputer
Ryoken's dash cluster loaded with 10 Autometer gauges
Column-mounted shift indicator (Ryoken's dash won't allow use of the stock indicator)
LED taillights (brighter, look nice yet stock-ish)
Cruise control

There's more, but I can't remember because I'm tired.

But 99% of my inspiration these days comes from non-4x4 mags.
 
I get peterson's, fourwheeler, offroad, rod and custom. Sometime i get hot rod or car craft when they offer it for 10 bux a year, i may get one year's worth just to see whats out there. If you are really into offroading, Crawl magazine is where its at. My brother gets that and its awesome!!

if i buy it inthe store once in a year i subscribe to it for at least 1 year. most rags cost almost 5 bucks from a store so there is a posibilty that i would spend more than what it cost to subscribe in a years time.


now i just need to do somthing with all these dam magazines i have piling up aroundt he house :lol:
 
I pick up a Peterson's or a 4WOR from time to time, but I'm finding more and more that all they seem to feature these days are new rigs and yeeps. As popular as the GMT platforms have been over the years I'm surprised they don't get more attention, but then I guess people would feel left out. I'd really like to find a magazine that focuses on our applications but the occasional nod will have to do.

BTW, it was cool to see ORD's chopped Suburban featured in the "boatsiding" article in the June edition of Petersen's :waytogo:
 
Classic Trucks is basically the old Chevy Trucks mag that used to come out. It has a lot of useful articles on upgrading older trucks with newer tech. If you go to 4Wheel Parts you can get a free subscription to their in house mag. It's not all that bad and you get a new parts catalog everymonth in it.:wink1:
