I've decided that I'm going to make the switch to a hydro clutch.

Now I need to make the decision on which Nv4500 I have to use. I have both the newer and older style. My guy feeling is to use the older style that has the external slave cylinder...just for ease of future replacment. I haven't driven either one, but I trust the source that the older one came from. When I picked up the newer one the guy said 3rd was starting to feel notchy when shifting....come to find out it had regular gear oil ran in it. So that one will probably need syncros at the very minimum.

Does the newer one offer any advantages over the earlier one that I should use it instead? I know the shift towers are different, not real sure if that make much of a differance in shifting. Other than the 1st gear differances and the slave cylinders, aren't they basicly the same?

Edit: Yes I know the t-case behind the newer one is drivers side drop.

friend in town and on here did the 4500 swap from a 465 .

hydro parts on cab stayed the same . made up longer hard line over to the ext early slave 4500 and hooked it up and blead it out all good .

we did the advanced adaptor spacer for his round 6 205 behind the 4500 and no mods needed as the combo changed 1/8" from 465/round 6 205 .

he loves it .

the covers do swap over . and another member here I think chevy 305 ? ? has a guys info that makes a nice shorter throw shifter setup for the later 4 bolt shifter .

the over drive will be super nice for cruising .

my buddy has 38" tires 4.56 gears and 70mph was 3200-3300 and he dropped down almost 1k rpm less at same speed. :thumb:

I've got a new square body master cylinder to use and planned on buying a new slave for which ever one I decide on. Think I have part of the old line I can use to connect the two as well.

I have seen the short throw shifters for the 4bolt cover. Didn't know they swapped over though, may look into that.

Looks like the older unit is going in.

Does the transmission care which bell housing/clutch setup is in front of it? Can the older box run the internal slave? Vice versa? Or are the transmission cases different? :dunno:

Are you going to be rebuilding the transmission regardless, or just running the smoother one as is?

When they switched slave cylinder styles, the input bearing retainers changed sizes as well. The older one has a diameter of 5.125" newer one is 5.60" (same as Dodge).

You need to keep the bell with its respective transmission. I'm sure you could engineer your way around either slave cylinder, but with the avalibilty of the parts it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

An Sm465 bell can be used on an older style (93-94) Nv4500. You need to drill two holes in the face of the transmission and use nuts/bolts.

I'm going to run the older one as is. It came from a shop my friend works at. They wouldn't have saved it if it was bad. If it does end up giving me problems....then I might rebuild the other one and swap them out.

Sounds like a plan. I also have an early NV4500 with an SM465 bell housing. I think I'm gonna hafta drill out 3 of the holes to make it fit. But I'm still a couple months out from getting it installed.

Thanks for the info!

If you swap on the newer top cover it makes it stupid easy to do fluid changes and overfill it like most people like to do. Just pop the shifter out and pour it in the top. It will give you options for that short shifter setup too. The throw is pretty long on 4500's

Chevy305 runs an advanced adapter bell housing to keep the mechanical linkage. What are you doing with the leftovers?
