And i guess assume with the auto you'd have to find a core and have it rebuilt, plus the spendy harness and with the stick figure purchase price plus pedal and hydo assembly and new clutch...

and which t-case would most easily adapt with mechanical speedo...

I would say the trick to making anything affordable is how good of a bargain finder you are. For me, it was easily the 4l80e because I found such a good deal on one. Popped up one weekend on craigslist out of a 93 chevy 1 ton 4x4 pickup, and when I showed up, it had 5k miles on it from being a new dealership install, and the tq even still had the laser etch and barcode purchase tag. Got it for $200 so it definitely made my decision for me since it was a direct bolt in on my 85 1 ton cucv. Now the harness on the other hand I went all out and got the compushift kit with some of the bells and whistles. I still think it would be cool though to have paddle shifters, which is suprisingly available with the compushift kit. If I would have gone on the cheap, I could have pieced together a kit for around $600, but I went the other direction because I have done pieced together wiring stuff before and it sucks. So instead of $600, it was $1500 and lifetime warranty and the best customer support I have ever dealt with.:D:D:D

i think it is a personal preference. me i like the reliability and longevity of a manual tranny. it either works or doesn't. nv 4500 have decent od until put behind a cummins and lugged, just make sure you have the right oil.

then again i'm also the sicko that prefers an 18 speed in my class 8 rig.:D

i agree as you cant compare an auto and stick... you need to do it other ways...

like..

nv4500 vs nv5600
or
2 auto trans w/od comparison... (sorry dont know model numbers)

for me my delema is to go from a smc465 to nv4500 or nv5600.....

sounds like an easy one to me, since they only used the nv5600 for a few years and only in dodges, but the nv4500 is way more common and dodge/chev. maybe look for a zf6 out of a newer chev?

top the op, if your truck now has an auto, I imagine it owuld be cheaper to swap to the 4l80e. seems like they are more plentiful and cheaper than 4500's as far as core units go.
