I am putting a 79 350 with 70's heads on it into my '87. I am bolting up the TBI to it using a performer intake. Which performer should I buy; EGR or non EGR? Never was a question with carbs, but will I have ECM issues without the EGR?
With a stock chip? Yes you will have issues as the ECM will be commanding EGR and it's not there, so it will not run correctly and set an error code.
Or get a custom chip.
If you have to pass emmissions then you will need EGR as well and the stock chip will work, but ultimately need some tuning anyway do to engine and head changes.
So am better to look at a dial tune for the FI and trans?Sure, the easiest method to modify these ECM is the G2 adapter from Moates that needs to be soldered into the ECM to except a newer style EEPROM. It will erase with a click of button. Stock chip is EPROM and needs a UV light to erase, and is not meant to be erased and reprogrammed but you can. Not 100% successful...
You may still be able to find new UV chips, but still only get one burn without UV eraser and still not 100% successful, especially after a few times. In the end way more time and same cost.
I tune these type ECM/ trucks with a modified ECM, when tune is done burn a final new 2732a ST chip and install in stock ECM.
So a G2, 27Fs512 chip, Burn 2, data cable and TunerPro software and your in the chip tune game.

To answer your first question, yes it does interest me. Not the same, but I do have 20+ years competive carb tuning. Most straight line racing is still carbs.Do you want to learn to tune? If yes Moates G2 adapter, 27fs512 chip, data logging cable, Burn 2 and TunerPro software. be prepared to spend at least 100 hours learning how.
If you don't want to learn to tune best case scenario is find someone to do it in person! If you can't then find a tuner who will work with you to set you up with starter chip, then data log, then get another chip. This is still time consuming and everything mechanical has to be correct to start.
Beware of any tuner that can give you a perfect chip first shot with no data! Not possible! If you believe it can be done I have snake oil then can cure anything and ocean front property in Idaho for sale... I have proven this in person many times and yet to be proven wrong...

Just letting you know what your in for, and it's addicting if you like computers as well. Having mechanical and tuning skills is a major starting point. So you can tune a carb, if you can run a laptop and know how to use a DVM your way ahead! Good luck!![]()
I am half tempted to swap the whole truck over to carb
