I finally installed my PSC ram assist and it works great when I guess oil pressure is high. When it is low it is hard as hell to move steering wheel.

I have a modified gear box from west texas off road. Do i need to get a high output power steering pump?

Which one do you guys recommend? I would like something affordable but good or tell me which one?

what do you have now?

Have you hot rodded it?

Pulley changes?

I have had good luck with the deisel hydroboost pumps.

Kert,
I still have the original power steering pump on the 83 k5. The gear box has been modded. I have not changed pulleys.

Will the diesel hydroboost pump work with my system? Do you think I should try? The way the steering is now is really loose steering. I can turn on the street with my pinky.

Is this how ram assist steering feels like?

To be honest, i've never had hydro assist. Just full hydro. The condition you describe is similar to mine if it were dying. Won't turn unless I gas it a bit and get the rpm's up. Probably just not pumping enough volume. You could try the hot rod tricks first. That'd be nothig out of pocket.

thats what i was just thinking....what hot rod tricks is he talking about for a ps pump

while we're here i have a ?....i have a ps pump w/remote resevoir...is there any difference from a reg pump other than the obvious, pros or cons? sorry 4 hijack!

Pump Modifications:

A remote resevoir pump is generally considered more desirable. This is due to the increased fluid capaicty. Increased fluid capacity generally leads to a cooler running system (this has been debated though).

The pumps themselves are identicial, but the "back half" of the pump casing is different for the regular pump and remote resevoir pump. The regular pumps reservoir is built into that back half of the pump housing whereas the remote reservoir obviously isn't.

Also, The full remote reservoir pump casings are impossible or nearly impossible, or extremely expenisve (I forget) to find at parts stores so if you need to replace one you generally have to split the pump casing in half and re-use the back half.

As B_to_C said the hydroboost and gas pumps are the same. There is a small difference in pressure between pumps of different part #'s but chasing that down isn't worth your time.

I had an 8 year old modded pump that worked ok with my hydro assist. Replaced it with a rebuilt one and put the modded flow/pressure stuff into the new one and immediately blew the seals out of the steering box (because too much pressure was built up). I put the stock flow/pressure stuff back into the box and had more steering than before.

IMO, replace the pump and you will notice a big difference. A worn pump isn't nearly as noticeable on a stock system.

I was going to do the hot rod tricks to my Hydro boost pump and all the tricks that had to do with increasing flow were already done on the hydro boost pump. This was a stock pump and nobody had ever been into it???

Kert do yo uthink I can run the diesel hydroboost pump on my application? I need to get a pump it's already whining and have heard of modded PS pumps not holding up. Would like to get it done correctly. I looked at some, psc pumps, howes and they are expensive. If I can get away with using this diesel pump then that's what I will run.

Let me know and thanks.

When I replaced my pump I thought something in the instructions must be wrong cause everything but stretching the spring was done to mine too.

KRC has some pretty reaonable prices on pumps if you decide to go the aftermarket route.

Yep, same here. I don't really think the spring thing is a longer term deal anyway. Maybe if you can figure out the strength of the spring and source a heavier one.

I did the WTO pump mods to my rig a couple years ago, but I did not drill out the hole to the size they recommended, just slightly larger than stock. Pump has plenty of pressure for my 1.5x8 ram.

Hole that you drill in the diesel hydro boost pump is already much larger than the size they recommend drilling it too.:eek1:
