Which sending unit do I need?

I`m going to be swapping gas tanks in my blazer. Instead of the 31 Gallon tank, I`m going with a 20 gallon tank from a LWB 87 p/u.

Now, I`m looking on Rock Auto, and I`m not sure what sending unit I need. They have ones for LH and RH, so I`m confused. Also, my pump should be the same in my 90 Blazer tank, correct?

EDIT: According to Autozone, the partnumbers for the pump are the same...am I good to go?

Umm, have you seen a pickup tank? They're long and skinny, to go outside the frame rails. I take it you're doing some clever in-bed mounting thing?

The sending units are made for the saddle tanks, and I guess they are mirror images of each other. I haven't looked at mine at the same time when they were out. I thought they were clockable, but I guess it would depend on what direction you were mounting the tank and which way you wanted the hoses to run.

If AZ says the pumps are the same, then you should be okay -- my junk's all carbed or diesel. :dunno:

You will need the corresponding sending unit for the year and model and gallonage of tank you're going to use. Like dremu said, those tanks are long and skinny saddle tanks that ran the length of the frame rail just under the doors of those trucks.

According to rock auto, the 20 gallon one is 54" long, which will fit right inbetween the bedsides

Yep. I`m using a back wall of a p/u cab, and it will be cut to go inbetween the bedsides, and mount using the cap mounting bolts. It will basically be a pickup.

in pickup l tank with filler to rear = sender lines to the inside of frame rail.

in pickup r tank with filler to rear = sender lines to the inside of frame rail.

the diffrence is in the pickup sock tube and float bends for left and right.

and the lines out the top of sender to left or right point to go to the frame rail. so basicly any one will work for a sideways mounting. but the lines might be tight to the back of the cab area if you mount close.

Okay ... just making sure you know what you're doing ;)

As said, for what you're doing the difference will be the plumbing direction... I'd get whatever, then decided which way to mount the tank based on the plumbing, if that makes sense.

Which would you prefer, a stock blazer tank, which will allow me to reuse the stuff I have, ie pump, sender, filler neck, or get the pickup saddle tank and sending unit?

If it were me I'd stick with the Blazer tank 'cuz it's bigger ... just stick it above the frame rails and build whatever tail stuff, i.e. flatbed or cage or whathaveyou, around it.

That said, the pickup tank behind the cab is smaller, so you'd have more room for a spare or whatever on the tail. I would worry about being nose-heavy though if you take that much weight off the rear :dunno:

Well, talked to my buddys dad, who is the one actually doing the welding. He thinks I should just leave the tank where it is, and after seeing how big the tank really is, I can see why he said that. Its going to take up about 1/2 the bed of the blazer:eek1:

Are there any parts I should order before I drop the tank? ie, mounts..the straps or bolts, etc...
