Which Stall convertor?

Ok, I got a th-350 rebuilt, balls to the wall with a reverse manual valve body(compression braking in 1st and 2nd). It's going behind a bone stock tbi 350, later that will be replaced with a built small block in the 400 hp range. I'm also running a 203/205 doubler. The trans guy recommended a 2200-2500 rpm stall, I thought that was kinda on the high side. I was thinking 2000 at the most :dunno: But maybe im crazy, I'm new to this.

What do you guys recommend?
 
Unless you're running a wild cam there is no reason for a stall convertor in a wheeler. Of course an engine with a wild cam isn't made for a wheeler anyways so the cam shouldn't be there either.
 
Big cams on the trail?

I have a very wild solid cam in my 454 when trail riding my stall makes alot of heat in my tranny and because of my high RPM stall I do not have any help from the engine when heading down a steep trail. Power brakes also suffer with radical cam but, When your really on the gas it makes alot of power and thats why I put up with overheating and the lack of power in my power brakes................
 
Ive got the 2200 stall in my 350 and it sucks, I'm going to deal with it for now but unless your running a mud truck stay with stock stall if possible.
 
It does vary. There is no "stock" converter except for an exact drivetrain application. Engine size, induction, AC or not, weight, gearing, transmission, and I'm sure more came into play when GM selected converters.

However, "close enough" usually works. Stall is dependent on engine output. A converter rated at 2000RPM will stall more or less than that given a different amount of power put to it compared to how it was rated.

Most non-performance GM converters in cars from the 80's seemed to be rated for less than 2000RPM, and I've *heard* that diesel truck converters (for instance) were as low as 1200RPM.

I'm not that big into automatics, I'm sure some of our builders will chime in (and have already) but I'm fairly certain combining a relatively low stall converter with a cam made for high RPM use is pointless.

i know your putting a doubler in your truck and i have thought about bumping my stall up do to all the gear...its kinda a double edge sword get a bigger stall or go hydroboost...

I see what you are saying, im still running drum brakes in the rear, for now. I don't plan on adding hydroboost. I figure if I'm in low-low range and the truck is driving through the brakes I can just put the tranny in neutral.
