I am building a 78 Blazer with Dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear , 454 motor, 44 Boggers. Mainly for mud. I have no trans or t-case yet. I want to use a 205 t-case but not sure what trans. to use.

So what would be the strongest transmission for my set up?

You are kind of leaving this pretty wide open. Are you set up currently for manual trans or auto? Which do you prefer? If an auto I would say a TH400, if manual someone else can tell you which is better.

yep t-400 for an auto or sm465. Theres also the nv4500 or a 4l80e but if your truck is trailered those are mostly wasted money cause you won't need overdrive

Funny too many guys are forgetting the tranny thats stronger than the 400: the TH475.

I pick for the automatic, the TH475.

I pick for the manual, the SM465.

This is true but they are harder to find, Unidentifiable form the outside, if im not mistaken, and a 400 is suffiecent in strength.

I believe the only differnace is straight cut planetary gears, correct?

Correct me if I am wrong but the main difference between the 475 and the 400 are the cut on the gears and you don't have to upgrade the sprag clutches in the 475 right?

You answered the questions correctly.

Straight cut gears can be had by any tranny shop, mainly the aftermarket ones like B&M, TCI, etc., etc.

It would almost be worth it to me just for the noise of straight cut gears. I love the whine they make.

I'd say sm 465-205. atleast with a toasted manual you can still limp it off the trail. also i hate push starting autos, LMAO!!!!

Aren't the TH475 hard to come by?

They were made for a short period and only in RV's, am I correct?

Wow a 475 never heard of that one, so sorry I didn't list it. I figured the 465 would be the better for the manual but never knew anything about the 475.

Just to clear it up the 475 is an upgraded version of the turbo 400, a 3 speed automatic.

The step up from the 465 would be an nv 4500 which is a 5 speed manual transmission
