Which way do you turn the TBI adjustable regulator?

I bought an adjustable fuel pressure regulator for my 1988 V10 Suburban a few months back. Just got around to installing it today. The thing is VERY hard to adjust. I bottomed the screw out, and was only able to achieve 4 psi.

I do think my fuel pump might be getting weak, that was actually my reasoning for buying the regulator and gauge.

So the question is, which way do you adjust it? Is all the way in with the screw max pressure, and backing the screw off lowering the pressure? Anyone know?

probably a pump.... when looking from above the tbi, counterclockwise... tightening it up and in to increase..

and yeah, that'll test your patience... :haha:

Are you saying you have 4psi total fuel pressure? Will it even run with that?

More pressure on the spring = higher fuel pressure up to the max of the pump.

PITA to adjust. Mine uses a allen head key thing which I lost. But yes, clockwise is more pressure, opposite is opposite. 4PSI, surprised it will run, I would check fuel filter first, then do pump. Alot of times the filter is clogged. You can tell if it weighs about as much as a brick.

Did you bend the vac tube directly below it down a bit, so it doesnt' rub?

Mine is a pain too.

I bent it a little bit, but I didn't want to break it.

As long as it isn't hitting, you are good.

I find it helps to wiggle the adjuster shaft a bit while trying to turn it.

But yes, overall....turning it sucks. It takes a lot of 1/8 turns to make a difference.

New pump in. With the regulator bottomed out it now reads 13 psi. Runs a lot better than with 4 psi . . . . . . .

I just make the stock one adjustable like this:

Cost? $0.00

Watch which way the tab goes, up is more pressure. Loosening the screw.

If you calculate your fuel pressure needs per injector size for estimated HP of engine you should know pressure needed. 13-14 for a stock motor is so much better then anything under 13...

Leave the injector pod off throttle body and hook up fuel lines and gauge, check pressure by turning key on, you get 2 seconds or run power to red wire off fuel pump relay and adjust, way easy then trying mounted on TB. When done install the injector pod.

A stock pump should get 14-15 PSI, Vortec or TPI pump looks identical and bolts in place, will get more then you need.

If you use one of those fuel pressure adapters off the feed line, get a decent gauge, so many are way off pressure. Oil filled gauges are only accurate when cold, so if your pressure drops when hot? It will be back up when cold.

Instead of running a gauge under hood, run a SS line and mount it where you can see it. Watching fuel pressure stay steady at WOT high RPM is much more important in built engines.

I have mine set up as a temp gauge. When done I pull it off and plug the hole.
