Help me choose my next winch. I had a Ramsey 12000 worm gear winch but it was just too damn slow.Im thinking an 8274 or the xp 9500? Give me some advice. my k5 is one ton with 44s and a BBC. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I want a real winch and you are looking for a ? Im thinking the 8274 anyone else care to chime in? /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I have a 8274 up front and when I get the rear winch bumper built it will hold my 12000lb warn /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

What type of terrain do you run? Mud? Rock?

If you run mud you will want the strongest winch you can afford. The heavy winches are usually slow, but in the mud alot of times it doesn't matter. Max pull is the biggest thing. Warn 12K, etc.

In the rocks line speed can be a very good thing if you are about to roll over and die. That is when a faster winch is a good thing. faster usually mean less pulling power though. 8274, Warn 9500, etc are fast.

From everything I have heard about the 8274 (the older ones) is that they are rated at 8000lbs but really pull much harder then most other 8000lb winches.

I have a Warn 12K on the front of my truck. It is SLOW, but it pulls really hard. Eli (Weisel) summed it up well on the last run. You don't know if the winch is pulling, has stalled, or if the front of your truck is about to rip off.

I have seen the Warn 9500's in action. They are a damn fine winch. I have seen the 9500HS and it is almost to fast. I saw another 9500 Warn (don't remember exactly which model) on FWP's truck and it pulled like a beast too.

Fred's (FWP) winch was hooked to a truck stuck in the mud, and we strapped Matt's (az-k5) truck up to Fred's (both 1 ton, 37-38" tires, etc) and the Warn 9500 was dragging Matt & Freds trucks into the mud with there brakes locked up.

according to the US Military (they would know) a stuck, or mired, vehicle on level ground up to the LOWER rim edge is a 100%+ pull. i.e. a 6000lb truck is 6000+. stuck to the hubs is 200%, or 12000+. and to the frame is 300% or 18000+. ive been all three and would have to agree.
note hills/slopes and grades all add/subtract to this

8274 is too small for a fullsize rig

I call bullshit on this...I have yet to personally see a 8274 fail when used on a fullsized rig, I can't say that about the others. And yes I have a 8274 on the front of my burb /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I don't know what model of warn I have on the furd, f-250, but its rated at 8,000 pounds, and has never left us stuck... only killed the battery... /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

I saw a number of them stall on single line pulls pulling jeeps out of mud this last weekend.

I guess I use my rig differently than most, and the 8274 is a great winch, but it is too small for use on a fullsize rig in my opinion.

Warn has promised us a bigger version of this classic, I'd love to see that on the market.

Thanks to all for the advice. I run in the mud covered rocks. The Ramsey I have pulls very strong and has never stalled out on me but I definitely need more line speed.
I think I'll get the 8274 and then get some first hand experience with speed. I'll have the fastest winch with the Warn and also the slowest with the Ramsey. Thanks to all /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

For a couple hundred more you can get the 16.5ti ($1260) instead of a 8274 ($1040).

Unless you find a good used 8274 I think they're a waste of money. The 9.5ti is nearly as good for less. And when you're spending a grand on a winch there is no reason not to buy a 16.5ti.

Thanks for the input maybe you missed='The Ramsey I have pulls very strong and has never stalled out on me but I definitely need more line speed.' The warn 16.5 ti is a monster I will give it that, but Im looking for speed. Thanks for the advice though /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Yeah, the 16.5ti is no Speedy Gonzales but it's still faster than your worm (Slowpoke Rodriguez).

If you're pulling 4,000lbs you're not rolling any faster between the two winches.

Chances are if you're in a hurry you'll be wrapping the cable around the bumper for the first 25' anyway if you're going to be spooling it in. I haven't seen a person able to run faster than the winch can spool out when in the freespool position.

And I don't know about you, but if the cable was coming in at 75fpm I'd need two people to prevent a rat's nest from happening. All the people in the club that have a 8274 have a rat's nest for their wire rope. Stacked up all over the place.
