Ok, I can get a Warn 9500i for $899 or I can get a Ramsey 12000 for $899. Whats the big difference? The local shop says the the warns have a better line speed (which) I understand as a good thing. But is that line speed better than the extra 2500 lbs???

Also on mounting... Has anyone mounted a plate behind the stock bumper and mounted the winch to that so that the roller fairlead actually sticks out of the front of the bumper, (through the hole that I can cut in the bumper) ??????

Or should I get one of those hitch thing-a-ma-doogies so I can use it front and rear? Man I bet that biotch gets heavy carrying it around though...

i'd go with warn cuz i like them, from what i've heard, they're the best. as for mounting, i'd just get a winch bumper.

if you go with the multi-mount go with the warn the ramsey would be to heavy to be carrying around lol the hs9500 isnt light either though lol i have a warn xd9,000i multi-mount on mine and love it i can put it on other vehicles and run it front or rear on mine

BTW, probably 80% of the winches I see on trail rigs have the big red W on the front of them. Also check out Warns website. I think that they offer a hidden winch mount.

I would go Warn too...I have a Ramsey Platinum 9000 (which I got for real cheap, so I couldn't complain about that), but it has already fried itself once (of course it was during our last "Snow Storm from Hell Winter Trip where everyone behind me was stuck and I could not help out with the dead winch! I remember it fondly - I was pulling out David Kennedy from 4WOR magazine in his stuck 2500 Chevy and it just stopped!) Add to that fiasco that Ramsey would not warranty it because I was slightly past their wimpy warranty period and I ended up getting bent over by their local winch repair dealer for over $300!! To say the least, my next winch will be Warn!!

As for mounting, if you want the flexibility of winching from front or back, get the receiver hitch mount and make it easy...otherwise you're better off getting a real winch bumper, because you don't want that thing pulling out of your "improvised" bumper when you most need it!

Oh, and get the 9500 lb winch, that is plenty of winch for most every situation, plus you can use a snatch block for even more power. You'll love the speed of it when winding in the rope!!

I looked them up, and here's what we can do: the normal Retail price on that HS9500i is $929.95, but with the CK5 15% off I gave all of you guys, it comes out to $790 and some change...now, with shipping we are going to be slightly higher than 4WP, right around $827. We aren't making hardly anything on that, but a sale is a sale, and we said that the 15% off applies to everything and it does!

One problem I've heard about with the multi-mount, you really can't pull off to the side or it will twist the receiver. I've seen home-made jobs (like I hope to do one day &lt;sigh&gt;) with *2* receivers, one on each side. Then you can make pulls off to one side without damage. I'm thinking it would be cool to have mounts front, back, and both sides. For the obvious reasons front and back. The sides would be good for keeping the greasy side down when really off camber (I really don't like people hanging on for ballast). It might also be pretty useful for getting the greasy side BACK down where it belongs after a "whoops!"

You couldn't really pull hard from the sides due to unseating/damaging the tires but I have seen cases where it would have been nice to be able to do it...

I have also heard this about the Portable mounts, but I thought it was because the actual mounting system was not as strong, not the receiver. But I have no first-hand experience with these portable winch systems, so someone else can probably verify this with their personal use experience...
 
Ok, so WARN it is. Now if I add up the difference 709 with free shipping vs. yours $820 Kpanza, Im gonna have to go with the 4wheelparts one. I'd rather give you the money but I have lots of other stuff to get and that near 100 bones could easily be used in other departments, like a winch mount of some sort.

as far as the weight issue goes (a big deal for multi-mount types), why not ditch the nasty factory steel cable and put Amsteel Blue on there? I dunno exactly how much the factory cable weighs, but its waaaaay heavier than Amsteel. Just a thought, might save someones back over the long term. =p

My mistake, I was talking about the hitch tube thingy (what is it called?) that slides INTO the receiver. That whole "twisting" force thing is bad, but a good receiver mounted solidly to the frame should be able to handle it. I think the weak point would be the multi-mount hitch thingy. I've also never seen the damage caused by this although I have seen it mentioned many times. Who knows, maybe it is an "urban legend" but, when you look at the setup, it seems to be an obvious weak point and the stories make sense. That is why I want to build my own.

i got a multi whinchy portable jobby on my winch, ugly as hell strong as my frame. we fabbed it up our selves (pop and I) i got a warn, the upright really really fast one, the portability is nice, and it bolts into my plow frame, its kinda cool, plow king by night, and off road warrior by day.

If you wheel in the mud, I would go with the 12,000. With the larger trucks, we still stall the 12,000s a lot and have to snatch block. Cant imagine if we were using a smaller winch. I would save and go for a 12,000 Warn.

Well, I was thinking the same thing, but I have actually started to grow very ill with "mudding". So in the event that I should get stuck I'll take my chances with the 9500 and a snatch block should I need one. Unless I change my mind in the next 2 hours.

It would be nice to have a choice! Here in MI there are not many choiuce on the type of wheeling. Either sand or mud.
