Which wiring diagram for my Diesel Engine

I have a 1985 Chevy K5 where the engine wiring is total spagetti.
Therefore I am rewiring most of the engine/engine rom back to it's original condition. I got hold of the workshop manuals, but i can't figure out what diagram is the correct one for my engine. The truck has never been a military vehicle, but was sold as an consumer vehicle for the private market with the 12v dual battery setup.

Which wiring diagram?

Wiring Federal Diesel Engine

Wiring California Diesel Engine

Have a nice day :D

The civvy dual batts are paralleled, i.e. positive to positive and negative to negative, staying at 12V. Many diesels came this way.

The military ones are run in series, i.e. positive to negative, for 24V, with some stuff tapped off the middle for 12v.

ANYWAY ... post up your VIN, or at least the first eight digits or so, and I believe from that we can determine whether your truck is tagged as meeting the more stringent California emissions requirements (thus the California title) or the less stringent rest-of-the-US regs (Federal aka 50-state.)

Thank You Very Much for clearing that up for me :D

The VIN : 1GBEK18C9EF119118

Well, the military ones are *weird*, but are very common in Europe (donno, does Scandanavia count as Europe?) because the US military surplused them there.

Odd, my VIN decoder says your truck was sold as an "incomplete" vehicle, which usually means a cab-and-chassis truck, sold without a bed, for an aftermarket company to put a flatbed or utility bed on it. It's hard to have a Blazer without a bed, however  ... oh, wait. I think your VIN is 1G8, not B. That would make it a Blazer/Jimmy. Whew.

Anyway, you have the C-code motor ... I *believe* that makes it the CA variety and the J-code is the Federal/50-state. (I *thought*, however, that the only difference was the intake, and the J-codes made a bit more horsepower than the C's.)

Maybe someone wise in the ways of the diesels will post up and can tell us more about the difference between the C and J engines?

If it's a civvy K5 it'll be a 'C' code 6.2 which has a different intake, and an EGR valve.

CUCV or 3/4 ton, one ton will be 'J' code. Open intake and no EGR. There are some differences in the heads, but they're minor and don't affect wiring or anything like that.

The 'J' code made about 145-155 hp, the 'C' code made about 130-140 hp depending on year.

If you're starting from scratch and building the wiring, go with the Federal version. The CA version is bound to have a bunch of extra crap...

The only thing you need to determine is whether you have an EGR or not.

dremu : Yes, my mistake, its a 8 not a B.
Tanks for the ekstra information  And yes, scandinavia is a part of europe  But one day, USA here I come :usaflag:

tRustyK5 : I'm not starting from scratch, but I'm rebuilding it as it sits, routing backwards and fixing what's broken and replacing what's missing.
Than I should go forward with the CA version ?

One more thing, I see from dremu's vin decoder that my K5 is a 1984 and not an 1985 as my registration papers sais. Surely thats got someting to do with the registration papers stating it as "FIRST TIME REGISTERED 1985" Would this make my wiring diagrams to new? Or is it the same for the 1985 and the 1984?

Thanks Rene ... and so much for my theory about CA-vs-Fed and VIN's.

Anyway, Denominator, I'm looking at the two diagrams in detail (just quickly scanned them before), and they list the engine RPO's they apply to. Does your glovebox still have the build sheet with all the options on it?

Also, the "California" one you show mentions an engine speed sensor, MAP, and a throttle position sensor, which I don't remember the 6.2's having. :screwy: Maybe that diagram is for newer year trucks ... but of the two you have, I'm liking the Federal one more and more.

I'd go and look in the factory service manual, but I gave it to the folks who bought my truck :doah:

No, the build sheet in the glove box is long gone :D
The diagram is scanned from the original workshop manual, so it should be the correct one :doah:

Well, if so, should be easy... see if you have lots of wires on the intake for the speed sensor, MAP, and ... duh, whatever the third thing was. If there are sensors, you need the wiring diagram with the sensors, and if not, you don't :D

Then we are back to my earlier question :

Ah, missed that the first time. First, an answer: I do not BELIEVE that anything materially changed between '84 and '85 for the civvy diesels, but the only one I've actually owned was a CUCV (the military ones) ... so I can't swear to it. I don't have any factory service manuals for the newer trucks ... but I still think there's something odd about all those sensors on the one diagram; that sounds like a MUCH later thing, like 90's.

Now, an explanation about years.

Here in the States, anyway, we refer to consumer vehicles by a fairly vague and peculiar thing called "model years". Until the 90's, more or less, the new year's models were introduced around September, so you could get a "1985" truck in mid- to late 1984. It's gotten worse lately due to federal regulations (CAFE, particularly, which limits how many low-fuel-economy vehicles -- like trucks -- you can sell in a "model year" against how many high-fuel economy vehicles -- like small cars -- you sell in that same period.)

In recent years I've seen next-year's cars available as early as February, partially due to marketing hype, and partially because the manufacturer had already sold as many gas-hog trucks as they were allowed to bas on poor car sales, so they just call the next batch the next years' and keep selling them :(

Especially for older vehicles, many jurisdictions therefore refer to vehicles by the year of manfacture (more common for trucks, especially big ones.)

Now, it's odd that yours is tagged as an '85; if the VIN calls it an '84 that means it was prolly made in '83. Maybe your motor vehicle people refer to imported vehicles by the year of import (i.e. first registration), especially since us silly Americans can't keep our stories straight about "model years" :haha:

My registration papers sais: "FIRST TIME REGISTERED 1985" (in the usa that is) "FIRST TIME REGISTERED IN NORWAY 1989"
That sould mean that it spent it's first 4-5 years in the USA.
Beats me, but the wiring for the rest of the car is exactly as in the 1985 workshop manual.

Thanks for all the help, I think I got it figured out now.
The easiest way never crossed my mine, the main connector on the federal has 14 pins, Calefornia has 17. That way mine has the federal engine wiring :)

Sad but true, I confirmed to day that my truck is a 1984 and not a 1985.
Will that make any major differences concidering my wiring digrams is for a 1985?

Shouldn't, no. I am not aware of any major differences on the 6.2 diesel. (The 350 diesel, ca. 1978-79, is entirely different, but that isn't an issue here.)

Little update! Sadly, the wiring has some differences, not much, but enough to confuse me. On the 85 the glow controller/relay looks like this :

On the 84, like this :

Plus this :

com.entigo.acdelcocatalog.servlet.ProcessImageServlet

Therefore it looks like I must find some new wiring diagrams.
Would be nice if someone who has the original shop manual could scan the diagrams and mail them over :laugh::D

I don't think you'll find anyone thats done that. The electrical manual is something like 11x14" pages, about 200+. Something that isn't easily scanned unfortunately, or I'd have done mine for everyone. (mines for a '91, so don't feel bad:))
