White Elephant 01 8.1 burb.

New hydraboost in. The leaking one has been done before, was a remanufactured.
Need to bleed it out and clean off the evidence of the leak on the frame.

The undash hero tool, so easy. Medium deep 15mm 3/8" drive impact universal, 6" extension, impact tool of preference

Driver side plugs. Lot of build up on insulators, but only on 1 side.
Am thinking/hoping this evidence of the poor pcv system the 8.1 is famous for, and signs of head gasket issues.
Has had more maintenance than I guessed. Champion spark plugs and probably after market wires.

So if I am going to replacing grungey plugs, more frequently, am thinking I don't want iridium, probably copper or maybe platinum if $is right

Dam shaky photos. Forgot to eat, low blood sugar. Pulled a dam Wade, gonna pay for it tonight.

Looking the right hand exhaust manifold firewall side not sure i ever want to mess with it in the truck. Intake mod looks doable by yours truly, when I need to do intake gaskets probably.
Tuning is all new to me, I would like to do the 2 mods @ZooMad75 mentioned. and am thinking that egr tube is an exhaust leak waiting to happen, and looks like a nightmare to replace in the truck. Egr delete is on the wish list.
what is need to reprogram the pcm

So today I fixed the tow haul button. Cleaned up some of the PO's wiring for the 2 aftermarket units, have not found a convenient accessory hot under dash. Pioneer single din tuner dvd player DVH-P5000MP and a pop out front DVD screen Pioneer AVX-P73000dvd and 2 7" PowerAcoustik video screens only 1 seems to work. No joy finding a replacement.
Have spent most of the afternoon on Crutchfield, not digging my choices. double din dvd display https://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KWV66BT/JVC-KW-V66BT.html?tp=20217 is the current contender. Crutchfeild claims I need to modify the sub dash, and Metra IP bezel, that has 4 solid colors available, mine is two tone.
I could go with single din would be easier, maybe. One of the features I would like is a back up camera. I am always waiting to for people to get their shit together and back me up to a trailer hitch, people I can't yell at, grrrrr. Not sure a single din will accommodate that.
This truck has middle seat radio control that functioned with the oem stereo. Has headphone jacks volume control, few other features. I was thinking the steering wheel controls adapters might restore some functions to that unit.
One thing I do not want is to have to listen to some kids movie when driving across country. So rear headphones and volume control, on the list.

If I remember correctly, my son put a double din in his '03 and the trimming wasn't severe.

I've looked at it. Stock has a slight bevel, if trimmed it will be straight, and I assume a small gap.
Maybe @shady has some input

Does your burb have the Bose factory setup? My 04 Tahoe does, and while my stereo comes on there's no sound I think my amp in the center console is blown out.

No Bose. As I understand things the stereo goes through the On Star module. Something like these are needed to retain the On Star ability, https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/on_star_adapter.html for aftermarket radio. In some of the research I have been doing people have made a loop type harness to eliminate On Star, so the left front speaker works. The amp for mine is above glove box.

The new Tahoe has no tunes ? guess you'll need to go redneck https://www.crutchfield.com/p_018SLFEXL/Bose-SoundLink-Flex-Bluetooth-speaker-Stone-Blue.html

Haha that's exactly what I'm doing right now.

I've actually never done a double din stereo my self. For that module, in them years I think it's just needed for OnStar. Not sure. I know in my 08 Denali have the dash went through the radio, and you HAVE to have a special module for that.
My 05 I just wired everything from scratch and I don't use OnStar so no advice there.
As for backup camera, I'd do one of the ones that is inside a rearview mirror. Looks like a normal mirror most of the time, and when it's in reverse half of it becomes a monitor. I personally haven't used one yet, so no idea if they're any good. But that's what I plan to put in my dually.

Going to do the rear view mirror type in the 77, the 01 has auto dimming temperature display and compass. Maybe if I can find a back up with those features.
The Pioneer system in my rig has 1 of those on star modules installed. I may just keep the current single din, and redo the dvd display in the center consul, with back up camera.

Gambled and ordered OSC2538 model radiator from Rockauto.
They $50 cheaper than Amazon, almost $300 less than Vatozone or Osmellies.
The gamble seems to have paid off it arrived today in apparent good shape.
I think I have all the parts to reassemble the truck now

An '01 Suburban would have an Analog based onstar system. GM had a bulletin to upgrade to digital back in the late 00's but I think that's all but dead now. You don't have to kill yourself to try and retain it as it won't work anyway. I'm not sure what the deal is you have to keep it to hear out of the left front speaker though. The onstar system didn't have a direct link to the left front speaker. It went from the onstar module to the radio via class 2 serial data.

The factory radio did have a pass through for the audio chimes, that was also passed via class 2 communication to the radio from the body control module. Normally adding an aftermarket radio to one of these trucks would have you adding a secondary module that would allow that pass through to happen to the new radio too. Crutchfield usually points that out in the installation notes along with what mount adapter and wiring harness adapter to use.

This truck does have an aftermarket module between the pioneer radio and the truck harness. The model number is similar to what I saw in some back then posts.
I wonder if original onwer had the on star updated to digital. He seemed to have the dealers do repairs.

The upgrade was not free. They worked it through the bulletin that the module and the labor to install and program got covered under a one time special coverage but you still had to get locked into a fresh Onstar plan for like $199.

I searched for the bulletin and confirmed a couple of things. The '01 and '02 GMT800 trucks/SUV's were not included in the upgrade since the onstar systems in those trucks were not upgradeable. The only GMT800 truck that could were the 2003 and 2004 models.
