Anyone have any luck with a really good autoparts shelf spray match? Im looking for a close match to my factory white '88 K5 using such brands as Duplicolor etc.. If anything, anyone got the "GM" paint name or is it just GM White?

40u was the basic white code. I can guarantee you that nothing on the shelf will be a perfect match. Best you can do there is get close. Find amnautomotive paint store. They can match your color and make a buzz bomb can. Still wont be perfect due to the application process.

Ya man.... Theres a LOT of variables in paint.

I remember thinking I could color match my buddys integra, to paint over a primer spot.
Let's just say, it didnt work.

really just looking to hit the black primer spots left by the factory paint chipping off over the years. thanks.

you can go to an autbody supply store, have em use the paint scan gun on your car, than have a custom spray can made up... or, they can also just put a standard formula for that code in a can.. it's not cheap..

maybe chief brody will chime in with what he paid per can...

all that said, if your not an experienced painter, willing to blend/clear out the panel, it'll never be great.. but might not notice it from 20' if the color is pretty close..

oh, and duplicolor products suck arse...

I used to sell a thing called a "Pre-Val sprayer" at auto body stores I worked in ,it was a glass jar with a pressurized power canister you could buy extra canisters for,and pour any paint & thinner or reducer,or anything else you desired into the jar,so you could spray "professional" mixed auto paints at home without needing a spray gun or air compressor..they used to work quite well, not sure if they still exist or not..you'll have a much better chance of matching the paint if you get a factory packaged quart than any spray can touch up stuff for sure..

And I agree--Dupli-Color sucks..their touch up paints are crap, they are usually laquer and they make OEM enamel paints bubble up,and are this as water and run way too easily...their brush on bed liner is the worst too,out of all the different brands--I tried it and several others I know did too, despite anal preperation of the surface,it peeled off after it dried very easily..Herculiner I used worked excellent ..

I use pre-val's on a daily basis.. it's a marine staple, I buy em by the case..... I mainly use em for gelcoat, but have sprayed paint thru em.. just did 30 gel spots on a 50'er yesterday with one.. they don't atomize particularly great, but they get the job done in a pinch...

but at that point, your buying actual pints and qrts of material and that makes the costs go WAY up..
