Who has the right of way, people going uphill on a trail, or people going downhill?

What is your thoughts on this?

It seems to me that one going uphill needs to maintain momentum, but it is still hard to stop, and backup.

Usually uphill has the hardest time re-starting if they stop, so they have the right of way.

i say up hill....

Hey 81jimmyslt.is that your 82 suburban for sale in the arcata safway parking lot...I called you the other day about that bumper....

I say whoever can pull over easiest. If you are coming up a hill and have an opening to pull over and I am coming down with trees on both sides of me then you need to get off the trail until I pass simply because I have no where to go.

I think the person going uphill does because its much easier for the person going down hill to stop and back up if need be. It would be very difficult for someone go uphill to try and control a truck only through brakes and back down the hill. Your truck will be much more controllable giving it gas back up hill than using brakes going down.

Thats what I have done for years.

It's the guy that rents a jeep for the weekend that worries me!

One time, on my way up to wheeler lake with my dad, my sister, and 2 kids in my 4-runner, this guy is coming down in a grand cherokee and wants to pass us.
I had no place to back up to let him by for a good ways, and he was not going to back up at all.
So he had his passengers push against my truck, while leaning out their windows. While he was on the downhill side!

Guess he read all those Jeep brocures and believed them!

I am pretty sure it is the people going up. I think I remember seeing a Forestry Service sign one time on Saddleback Mountain in Southern California, which read "Uphill traffic has the right of way". The sign only lasted a little while before someone shot it to pieces with a shotgun.

I slways try to move out of the way if I can just to keep the peace. Some people are real pricks and I don't feel like listening to them, I just want to wheel. I'll even move out of the way of smaller trucks, It gives me an excuse to run over small trees!

I second that!

I once backed up a 50 degree hill to let someone going down pass. Just for the pucker factor for my friends!
